Well, it’s been about two months since I last visited this little blog, and I sure didn’t mean to be absent for that long. Life took priority—estate work took a lot of my attention, but so did the emotional component of cancer recovery. I just didn’t have enough in me. But that has changed—I still have estate work and am still recovering from cancer, but my focus is better.

Back in January when I was heading to Fisk, an art and design studio, gallery, and publisher run by a fellow CalArts grad, I saw the news about Purringtons Cat Lounge closing plastered on the door. I was sad.
So imagine my delight to see that they were purchased and will reopen! About the new owners, the former owners say, “Our little baby is in good hands!” Willamette Week has the details: Portland’s Only Cat Cafe Is Reopening Under New Ownership.
They’ll expand the cafe and redesign the bar area, and “the food and beverage menu will also be revamped.” I’m also excited by the idea that more cats may find loving homes through the cafe’s adoption program (as of today, the number of cats that have been adopted is 628). It’s unclear when they will open, but my guess is that their Instagram account is where that info will be found. Good luck to new owners Garrett Simpson and Helen Harris as they prepare to reopen.
I’ve always delighted in the play-on-words for Groundhog Day: Ground Hog Day. For me, it’s a perfectly good opportunity to enjoy delicious ground meats of any kind. Sure, a purist’s approach is to only chow down on pork, but I’m flexible and happy to entertain more meats than that. Here are some spots I’d be happy to spend time eating ground hog etc.
Scratch Meats. I love these guys, who offer their delicious sausages at various farmers markets every week. I get mine at the Hollywood Farmers Market and I’ll be stopping by on Groundhog Day to pick up my favorite—Chicken Parmigiano. It’s ground chicken thigh mixed with sun dried tomatoes, a variety of hard cheeses and spices. We are big fans at our house. They also offer a number of other sausages made with pork, beef, lamb, and even a Paleo-friendly sausage that includes variety cuts (organ meats). The Oregonian’s Fifth Annual Dumpling Week is back here in early 2019—get your fill of dough-encased delights for $10 or less from 36 places in Portland from Friday, February 1 to Saturday, February 9. The dumpling passport is back, too: download it here.
You can find the full list of participating restaurants on the Dumpling Week website, (also in map form) but if you’re like me, it will be hard to hit them all. Real talk: even though I focus some of my time on food and eating, I also have a roster of clients who need my time, too. So, if I was to visit one place a day (and twice on the weekend) for the nine days, here’s where I’d go.

I stopped by this morning and peered in the windows to see dusty, random stuff strewn about. There was a man sitting in a chair with an orange jumpsuit and a breathing filter (he was so still at first that I wasn’t sure what I was seeing exactly) and with the big dumpster out back it looks like they are cleaning out the space. What’s going in there is anyone’s guess, but I hope it’s going to be something good for the neighborhood; there’s also a possibility that they are simply cleaning it up for the sake of cleaning it up. I’ll keep an eye on it.
