I’m so pleased that Beaverton Restaurant Week is back! Produced by the Beaverton Downtown Association and the City of Beaverton, it starts tomorrow, Thursday, September 26 and lasts through Sunday, October 6, 2019. Close to a week and a half, but who’s counting? 44 restaurants around downtown Beaverton are participating, which means the ability to get to these places via transit is even easier than in past years. The gorgeous, delicious, magical Adriatic Fig.
This past weekend I made it over to Fig Fest at One Green World Nursery. One of the things that was on my docket was to try the different figs they had to offer; there were seven varieties to sample. Continue reading “My New Fruit Love is the Adriatic Fig”
Mark your calendars! The third annual Fig Fest is this Sunday, September 22 from 10am-5pm out at One Green World Nursery, located in the Southeast Portland neighborhood of Pleasant Valley (and not too far from the Leach Botanical Garden, which, if you haven’t been to yet, you need to visit). Figs are one of the most wonderful fruits and I came to love them when I lived in Queens where fig trees (and grape vines) were pretty much everywhere (thanks, Greek and Sicilian immigrants). As you may have heard, there was a major fire over on Bridgetown Bites headquarter’s side of town (I could see the smoke from my house). On August 26, 2019 it burned in a section of the Madison South neighborhood around 82nd Avenue and NE Knott Street, seriously damaging nearby structures—homes and businesses. The Lumberyard—a local business, and one that was affected, though only lightly—has counted their lucky stars and organized a GoFundMe campaign to raise funds for those who did not fare as well. An excellent event is just over the horizon—the Big Ass Bake Sale at Cookshop. Over 40 of Portland’s best bakers, pastry chefs and restaurant owners are banding together to produce this sale, with all proceeds going to RAICES, “a nonprofit agency that promotes justice by providing free and low-cost legal services to underserved immigrant children, families, and refugees.” It will take place on Saturday, September 7 from 10am to 2pm, or until they run out of sweets.
