Tamales Festival at Portland Mercado February 25-27

I’m going to tell you something that’s a little embarrassing—last month was the very first time I ever visited the Portland Mercado. I’ve lived in Portland for a number of years now, and it took me all this time to make it there. So, please—don’t make my mistake. Go soon—and why not for the upcoming Tamales Festival?

I wanted to follow up on a couple of posts from last year regarding the Bing Mi Dumpling & Noodle Bar and Tokyo Sando. Bing Mi, known for their jianbings for years, shared the news of their new dumpling and noodle bar last October. Tokyo Sando had to go back to Japan for a little while and was unsure if they’d open again for “Season 3” in 2022. The good news is that both are happening and are almost ready for you!

Food Cart Pods Coming to NE Broadway in Grant Park

For the longest time I’ve wondered what is up with the old Burger King building on NE Broadway. It has been fenced off for years and frankly, it’s kind of an eyesore. I was wandering around the internet this morning and landed on Chaat Wallah’s website. Chaat Wallah is a project from Deepak Saxena and the DesiPDX folks that serves “fun fusion reinterpretations of Indian street food.” In small type toward the bottom of the website is written “coming to Cully in 2022.” Of course my curiosity was piqued.

Taiki Nakajima of Tokyo Sando Featured on Munchies

I only recently came across this great video produced by Munchies (the food vertical for Vice) featuring Taiki Nakajima, the person behind Portland’s beloved Tokyo Sando food truck fame. He has had a lot of interesting experiences around the world, loves making Japanese-style sandwiches, and opened his truck in Portland because he feels the city values small businesses.

He also has hosted a number of pop-ups at his truck, but it closed until 2022 because of some things he needs to take care of in Japan.

“I want to make people happy—that’s why I’m making sandwiches.”
