Four Things I Learned This Week (April 22)

Happy Earth Day! 🌎

Hit the Spot will move on from their burger cart and open a restaurant in SE Portland. They posted on their social media this week: “We got some big news y’all! Just signed the lease and got the keys for our new restaurant. It is located at 676 SE Morrison St. It was most recently BrunchBox! It’s only 5 minutes from our current location. We’ll be open early summer!” They are also selling their cart for $50K. I’ll be sorry to see them leave their location on NE Sandy Blvd, but the restaurant sounds like progress. 676 SE Morrison Street, Portland

Jollibee is coming. Willamette Week first reported on this—they spotted a listing for the Filipino fast food giant in the mall directory of the Tanasbourne Village mall in Hillsboro. This is a big deal; Jollibee is a big deal. Yes, the chicken is a huge draw but the sweet Jolly Spaghetti with hot dogs is truly legendary; be sure to try the halo halo, too. I love the big red bee mascot. Now if only Red Ribbon Bakery would open a location in our area. NW 185th Avenue & NW Evergreen Pkwy, Hillsboro

Division Midway Alliance features Sunbela. The March DMA newsletter has a great blurb on Sunbela, the excellent Iraqi bakery and restaurant on Division near SE 125th. I stopped by recently and let me tell you, this place is terrific. I love this quote from Faten, Sunbela’s owner: “I opened this restaurant so that our community feels a sense of belonging in the new country. Food brings people together and it’s a way to celebrate life and culture. I am happy when community members tell me how much they like the food.” Definitely check it out. 12503 SE Division Street D, Portland

The Record Pub will open in Sellwood. While I was meeting a friend for breakfast at Bastion this week, I noticed a sign up in a nearby storefront for The Record Pub. I know very little about them, aside from their offerings of “Records. Tapes. Beer. Gear. Experience.” I’m definitely curious about the beer (their liquor license application doesn’t mention anything about food). It could be a pretty awesome spot to meet up for some pints and tunes. I’ll see what else I can find out (and if you know anything, send me a tip). 6034 SE Milwaukie Avenue, Portland

Four Things I Learned This Week (April 15)

Gartner’s interior is closing for a bit. Gartner’s Country Meat Market in Cully is going to close their shop space for 3 to 4 weeks starting this coming Monday, April 18. They’ll be working on some upgrades and maintenance on the interior, but curbside pickup and local delivery will still go on. Good luck to them with all the new changes. 7450 NE Killingsworth Street, Portland

News to me: Decarli is moving. It’s probably old news but I just learned this week that Beaverton restaurant Decarli will be moving to the old Hometown Buffet space on Southwest Hall Blvd. The new space is larger than they need now but it allows them room to grow. The move is slated for “spring 2022,” according to their website, so they should be there any time now. 4545 SW Watson Avenue, Beaverton (currently), 3790 SW Hall Blvd, Beaverton (future)

Dick’s Primal Burger is now open on N Williams. I was sorry to see Dick’s Primal Burger leave Cully, but that’s how things go sometimes. They are now open in their new N. Williams home and will be open from 11am to 9pm “every damn day.” Get yourself a bag of Dick’s, North Portland! Now… to find out what’s going to happen to their old space in Cully. 4120 N Williams Avenue, Portland

Update on Grant Park food carts. From the GPNA newsletter: “The 6-cart food cart pod at 3505 NE Broadway is currently on hold. However, the permit for the 12-cart food cart pod at 3550 NE Broadway (formerly Burger King) is expected to be approved in the next month
or two. The architect says that construction on that pod will begin as soon as the permit is in hand, with an opening expected in late spring or early summer.”

Bonus: Remember that Rabbit Hole in Montavilla is having their soft opening tomorrow, Saturday April 16. And in Sellwood, Maeve’s grand opening party is also on Saturday, April 16 from 4-8pm.

I also want to acknowledge three important faith holidays around this time: Ramadan, Passover, and Easter (4/17 for the Western church and 4/24 for the Orthodox church). So I send my greetings out to those of you who celebrate: Ramadan Mubarak, Happy Passover/Chag Sameach, and Happy Easter!

Four Things I Learned This Week (April 8)

Briskets & Gravy’s grand opening in Cully. The new Briskets & Gravy truck will join the outdoor space at Cully Central with a grand opening tomorrow, Saturday, April 9. Check out some of the things they offer, here, from a brisket burger to brisket tacos, smoked chicken wings to brisket & gravy over buttermilk biscuits. Yum. 4579 NE Cully Blvd, Portland

Easter pre-orders at Bee’s Cakes are open. Take a look at the menu, choose your favorites, place your order and pick up on Saturday, April 16 from 9am to 3pm. Bonus: they’ll be open that day for coffee and pastries. 7137 NE Fremont Street, Portland

Cloudforest Chocolate to close Morrison Street shop. However, it won’t be forever—they do plan to relocate and reopen. You can still enjoy their chocolates and other things on Morrison Street until the end of April. 727 SE Morrison Street, Portland

Pho Van’s whole roast fish meal gets PoMo love. Katherine Chew Hamilton and her pals headed to Pho Van recently to enjoy, among other things, the whole roast fish meal there. It really sounds good and I love the “roll your own” rice paper rolls element—it’s the fish and a bunch of accompaniments: “lettuce, mint, basil, cucumbers, sliced tart green apple, a bowl of cooked noodles, rice paper, and a warm bowl of water for dipping the paper.” A neighbor mentioned this online a while back and warns that you have to call ahead for this dish. Also, you can ask your server to help you understand how to roll a salad roll if you need a tutorial. The whole thing sounds fantastic. 1919 SE 82nd Avenue, Portland

Four Things I Learned This Week (April 1)

It’s Poisson d’Avril today. Sure, it’s April Fools’ Day today in America, but in France (via Portland) it’s April Fish (Poisson d’Avril) Day. Over at Pix Patisserie‘s Pix-O-Matic vending machine you can get your chocolate and paper versions of April Fish 24/7, while they last. The chocolate fish are found all over France on this day each year and the trick part of the deal comes with children slapping unsuspecting adults on the back with a paper fish and yelling, “Poisson d’Avril!” while running away. No doubt the chocolate fish at Pix are going to be seriously delicious. 2225 E Burnside Street, Portland

10th Annual Greekster at The Side Yard Farm. The good folks at Cully’s Side Yard Farm are hosting a Greek Easter feast on Sunday, April 24—the day of Orthodox Easter. It will be an AYCE (all you can eat) affair on site, and in a very short time tickets sold out. But there is a takeout option for those who still want to enjoy the food. The meal includes a whole bunch of things including spanakopita and tiropita, pastitio, a Greek village salad, souvlaki, and baklava. Find more details, here. 4800 NE Simpson Street, Portland

Cheesemonger Sam from Cowbell wins gold. Great news from Cowbell: “Many of you will recognize Sam from behind the counter in our shop, and from wholesale sales calls and deliveries. We’re thrilled to say Sam brought home the gold earlier this month at the Cheesemonger Invitational in San Francisco—a national competition among the best cheesemongers in the country!” Big congrats, Sam! This is a fantastic achievement. 231 SE Alder Street, Portland

Support Nam Phuong Market. Roseway’s Nam Phuong Market, a wonderful Asian/Vietnamese market, was attacked this week by two people destroying their big picture window. I have no confirmation as the reason why they did it. From a neighbor: “The owners are very nice and they do not deserve this!! I always fill up on my condiments there. They also have a wonderful meat selection and lots of veggies!” You can see the two dudes breaking the front window via a security video posted over on Reddit. This really stinks and I hope you can stop by and support Nam Phuong Market with a purchase. 6834 NE Sandy Blvd, Portland

Four Things I Learned This Week (March 18)

Las Osita is moving to Montavilla. Mill Park‘s loss is Montavilla’s gain. La Osita—home to delicious breakfast tacos, coffee, and more—posted on their Instagram yesterday about their impending move to the Taylor Court Grocery space at 1135 SE 80th Avenue. “The building is a historic neighborhood market that shut down as life happened in the midst of the pandemic. It has fallen into a bit of disrepair but we are excited and thankful to have a chance to bring it back to life for the SE Portland and Montavilla community.” Why did they end up in Montavilla? “For the last year we had been looking up and down 122nd for a potential spot but nothing fit the bill.” Official opening date is to come. 1135 SE 80th Avenue, Portland

Kate’s Ice Cream opens today in North Portland. The Oregonian reports on today’s opening of vegan ice cream maker Kate’s Ice Cream in the old Ruby Jewel space on N Mississippi Avenue. Stop by starting at noon today for her creamy coconut-milk-based ice creams, including Mississippi Mayhem, “a purple cake-flavored ice cream with everything from brownies to sprinkles to cookie dough thrown in, depending on the day.” 3713 N. Mississippi Avenue, Portland

Lasagna listicle. The Willamette Week put together a list of six take-and-bake lasagnas you can get in Portland. It was a lot of fun to see what Jason and Andi chose, and I can personally give a major thumbs up to the Lasagna Project lasagnas. I started ordering them that first year of the pandemic and honestly, they have spoiled me for most others, because they are so freaking delicious. Next on my list is to try the lasagna from East Glisan Pizza Lounge. I’ll add that one glaring omission on the WW listicle is Stefania’s Kitchen, which makes a handful of excellent take-and-bake lasagnas.

Inaugural St. Joseph’s Market is Sunday. Head to Wellspent Market this Sunday from 12-4pm for their first annual St. Joseph’s Market. St. Joseph’s Day is a big day in Sicily, so expect to see some traditional Sicilian treats at this event, as well as things for the gardener, like garden-ready plants and heirloom Italian seeds. The aforementioned Sicilian treats include zeppole from Sebastiano’s and sfincione, a type of Sicilian pizza with origins in the 17th century, from Pizza Thief. Culinary Breeding network is also bringing a whole bunch of wonderful things: “authentic Italian marzipan molds in shapes inspired by the gardens of Italy, plant-themed jewelry, artwork, tea towels, linens, ‘zines, and more, including plants from Log House Nursery and seeds from Uprising Seeds.” It should be an excellent time. 935 NE Couch Street, Portland
