Four Things I Learned This Week (February 21) in Portland Food

Mika Paredes will be L’Echelle’s Executive Chef. It seems very apt for Mika Paredes (Cornet Custard) to take the helm of L’Echelle, what with her close connection to the late Naomi Pomeroy, who founded the restaurant. More on Instagram. 4537 SE Division Street, Portland

Lansdowne Social opens next week. I was randomly fed by Instagram’s algorithm the page for Lansdowne Social, and was definitely intrigued by it. First, it looks like events—dinner and afternoon tea—will take place in what was the ÄNIKS space. Martin Pfeifer was Chef de Cuisine there and is now Executive Chef at Lansdowne.

They describe themselves as “a NE Portland neighborhood restaurant with a communal dining concept, all about good food and great company. Twice a night we serve up a rotating, five-course, prix fixe menu of the best seasonal ingredients from the Pacific Northwest.” You can reserve your seat on their Tock page. They look to launch February 28, 2025. 518 NE 28th Avenue, Portland

The McMenamins Ram’s Head will close. It’s uncommon for a McMenamins property to close, so this was a surprise. But they do not own the property, and they chose after 35 years, to not renew the lease. They will close in June, with a big farewell party as a sendoff. 2282 NW Hoyt Street, Portland

Portland has a food cart dedicated to loukoumades. Yanni’s Greek Donuts opened in January but I only became aware of them recently. It’s run by brothers Theo and Luke, who grew up here in Portland’s Greek community. Their cart is decked out with the look of the Greek flag.

They offer three flavors of loukoumades: a classic Honey and Cinnamon, Chocolate Pistachio, and Caramel Coconut. Plus you can get a Greek frappé with it! I love frappés! (And yes, they use Necafé.) These loukomades are the ball-shaped version, not the ring shape (personally that’s my preference, but they are harder to find). 1400 SE 9th Avenue, Portland

Zwickelmania is this weekend, too! As is the west side CSA Share Fair. And 82 Acres has opened their doors for diners. I went to a media preview, and took a few photos.

Four Things I Learned This Week (February 7) in Portland Food

Culmination Brewing Company is shuttering. Unfortunately, Culmination Brewing will close both their brewery and taproom. The reasons? Economics and the linger COVID pandemic effects: “We never fully recovered from the financial challenges that COVID brought us despite Herculean efforts by our incredible staff and our amazing brewers Daniel Hughes and Andy Scott.” The last day to enjoy their beer is Saturday, February 15. Fomo Kitchen will also be there at the taproom. 2117 NE Oregon Street, Portland

Union on Hawthorne is open. Steeplejack Beer announced the opening of their location on SE Hawthorne and 38th Avenue. This is the building that burned in December 2022. But the good folks at Steeplejack ave turned this space around and are sharing it with Harder Day Coffee Company and Musette bakery. There will be some food carts, too. They’ll be open 7am to 4pm for coffee, 11am to 9pm for beer. 3757 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland

Dick’s Primal Burger launches breakfast. They started their breakfast service in late January, and you can access it on the weekends from 8am to 11am. Look for waffles (GF) biscuits & gravy, avocado toast, scrambles, bowls, and more, including coffee and mimosas. Bread products all have gluten-free options. 4905 SE Woodstock Blvd, Portland

Monty’s Red Sauce is open. After months of preparation, this east coast Italian-American red sauce joint will serve dinner nightly. “Heaping portions, cozy booths, big space, long bar, all perfect for date night to big groups and everything in between.” You can make a reservation or just walk in between 5pm and 9pm. 6716 SE Milwaukie Avenue, Portland

Four Things I Learned This Week (January 31)

Caffe Destino is 5-years old. And they are having special deals and treats to celebrate this anniversary. Stop by on Sunday, February 2 from 7am to 4pm to enjoy. 1339 NE Fremont Street, Portland

Landing Paper Plane’s first fundraiser is March 1. I wrote about Landing Paper Planes at the end of last year—this is the project to open a pay-what-you-can cafe supported by a fine-dining restaurant. They are in fundraising mode and their first one is at the start of March at TaborSpace. It will be a six-course meal (gluten free, with vegan and vegetarian options), with beer, wine, and NA drink options. They’ll also have entertainment and a silent auction.

The cost is $100 per person, $500 for a table of six. Buy your tickets here. 5441 SE Belmont Street, Portland

Changes at the Costco food court. People are very passionate about Costco—members love the rotisserie chickens, the giant packages of TP, and … the food court. Big changes are coming “that has left fans divided.” No, it’s not an increase to the hot dog and soda combo, but the soda will change—they are switching to Coke products and will no longer offer Pepsi products. And maybe higher quality fountain drink dispensers. Multiple locations

K&F Coffee Roasters has closed. A reader emailed me with the following: “Owner of K&F Coffee, Rudy Zarfas, quietly closed his doors last week. The business was struggling ever since the pandemic and with recent rent hikes they could no longer afford to stay open.” I checked the website and it is no longer accessible. Their Instagram says they were the oldest family-owned specialty coffee roaster in Portland; Rudy acquired it in 2019. 2801 SE 14th Avenue, Portland

Four Things I Learned This Week in Portland Food (January 17)

Big pizza news. I learned from the Willamette Week that Old Town Brewing (NE) will welcome Baby Doll to their kitchen. This will be Baby Doll’s second location. Fun fact: Adam Milne, who owns Old Town, also owns Baby Doll, which he bought in 2021. No indication in the article if they are up and running now, but it’s full of other great info—check it out. 5201 NE Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, Portland

LA Street Dogs at Niños Birrieria. I was over at the Niños Birrieria cart at Upright Brewing Station yesterday after a meeting and saw they just added what they call “LA Street Dogs” to the menu. They start out as a hot dog, are bacon-wrapped, with the addition of bell peppers, onions, mustard, mayo, and ketchup; jalapeño on the side. You can get them as a combo with fries. 7131 NE Prescott Street, Portland

Toro has temporarily closed. This Mexican restaurant on NW Everett has closed their doors and will reopen in spring 2025. During the closure the culinary team will travel to Mexico to honor “the traditions, techniques, and ingredients that make Mexican food so vibrant and diverse.” Look for an updated menu and redesigned space when they do reopen. 1355 NW Everett Street, #120, Portland

Sandy’s Myanmar Cuisine has left CORE. This is a big loss for CORE and for those of us who enjoyed their food there. No indication as to where Sandy’s Myanmar Cuisine will land—or if they will expand again beyond their catering work—but we will stay tuned to find out. They closed as of January 10. 3612 SE 82nd Avenue, Portland

Bonus: Pan Roast special. I mentioned Pan Roast last week as one of the vendors going into the Flock Food Hall. This weekend you can enjoy a sneak peek of one of the dishes they plan to offer only at Flock, but at their Oak Tree Station location: a loaded clam chowder bread bowl. On top of their New England-style clam chowder are prawns, clams, and a whole lobster tail. That’s quite a meal. Stop by Oak Tree Station this Saturday and Sunday, January 18 and 19, to enjoy, until sold out. 5900 NW Friberg-Strunk Street, Camas, WA

Four Things I Learned Last Week in Portland Food (January 3)

Javelina has found a place to call home. Indigenous pop-up-turning-restaurant Javelina announced late last year that they have found a place to land in Portland—the Lil’ Dame space in Northeast Portland. On Instagram, they said, “We have secured a hosting space to open the FIRST indigenous dining restaurant in Portland, Oregon.”

They will run two services at the new location—the original Javelina concept offering “classic powwow comfort food,” and a new dinner concept, which they will say more about this year. A soft opening will be on Monday and Tuesday, January 13 and 14, and full service starts Thursday, January 23, operating Wednesdays to Saturdays. Very exciting! Reserve on OpenTable. 5425 NE 30th Avenue, Portland

Pip’s Original closes Beaverton location. Unfortunate news for one of our western suburbs—Pip’s closed up shop in Beaverton. Sounds like it has to do with rent increases and the stance of the landlord and property management company. They were “ultimately unable to reach an accommodation,” and that meant shutting down in Beaverton. They are still operating at their NE Fremont location. 12400 SW Broadway Street, Beaverton

And Blue Star closes its Lake Oswego and Mississippi locations. The Mississippi location was my first encounter with Blue Star, and I’m sorry to see them leave that space. On their Instagram they posted, “These spaces have been home to countless sweet memories, joyful celebrations, and deep connections. While this decision was incredibly difficult, it’s one we had to make to ensure the long-term stability of Blue Star as we head into our 13th year.” You can still find them at South Waterfront, Goose Hollow, Division Street, and PDX Concourse D. 3753 N Mississippi Avenue, Portland and 350 1st Street, Unit C-4, Lake Oswego

Giveaway! Support the local small business community. Former bartender Matt Kesteloot is organizing a giveaway of $5 gift cards to support local small businesses. How to participate? Enter from Friday, January 17 to Friday, January 31 by posting a picture of yourself at your favorite, bar, restaurant, coffee shop, vintage store, etc. Tag the business and use the hashtag #BeThereForPDX. On Saturday, February 1, winners will be chosen randomly to split the pot. Read more on Matt’s Instagram, including updates on what businesses are participating. Multiple locations
