Four Things I Learned This Week (June 21)

Happy summer! We have crossed the summer solstice and are now officially into summer by the solar calendar (midsummer by the Celtic one). The Oregonian has a listicle of rooftop bars and patios on which to enjoy a meal al fresco.

TANAKA is open in Gresham. This katsu sandwich shop (“Inspired by Osaka. Created in Tokyo. Baked in Portland.”) opened June 14 in the Alta Civic Station building but they have a special through the month of June: “20% off all menu items at TANAKA Gresham from June 14th-30th 2024, Dine-in only, Excludes Retail & Cold Case, Some Exclusions May Apply.” 1493 NW Civic Drive, Gresham

Fundraiser for the Recovery Café Roseway tomorrow. Part of the Recovery Café Network, the Roseway café is hosting a fundraiser for their important work. A Recovery Café is “committed to serving people who have experienced trauma and the results of trauma like homelessness, substance use disorder, addiction, and other mental health challenges.” This fundraiser is Roseway’s first. There, you can enjoy food and drink, live music, and brief program with remarks from Recovery Cafe Network Co-Founder Killian Noe. Slow Food Portland’s June convivium is next week. I’ve been to a couple of these events and always had a good time. On Wednesday, June 26 the topic will be “Portland’s Farm to Table, the Past and the Future: An Evening with Cory Schreiber.” A James Beard award-winning chef, writer, and teacher, Cory will “share his experiences and insights on the early years of the farm-to-table movement, current trends, and his vision for the future.” Happening at Cookshop. 1919 to open in old Sessionable space. A new lounge called 1919 is opening up on Division Street. The idea is that it will be “a public room in which to sit and relax.” Sounds like they want to be a neighborhood local. Work is being done on the interior and I’m looking forward to seeing what they do with the place. 1919’s website, at the writing of this piece, is not accessible, but the domain exists. Four Things I Learned This Week (June 14)

Don’t forget—Strawberry Shortcake Week continues to the end of the weekend!

Cicoria is closing. The final day of service will be Saturday, June 29. From their Instagram: “This decision has been monumentally difficult, but given the rough and unforgiving market conditions Portland is currently experiencing, we feel there’s no other choice.” (This is reminiscent of what JaCiva’s recently said.) And there’s this, a tiny bit of hope of their return: “Please stay tuned for updates on what may lie ahead in the near future, as we hope to welcome you back, but don’t forget to mark your calendar for Summertime Scoops on Thursday of next week, June 20th.” 3377 SE Division Street, Portland

Hungry Dumpling House will open on SE Hawthorne. This location was home to Hawthorne Hophouse (closed in 2020) and Poke Qube (closed in 2023), and now will be a dumpling (and more, likely) spot. The folks behind Hungry Dumpling House (also known as Happy Dumpling Inc) appear to the be the same ones behind Sichuan City in Happy Valley, much lauded by Katherine Chew Hamilton in Portland Magazine. I’m excited about this and seeing what they bring to the neighborhood. 4111 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland

Bill Oakley on snacks. This week Bill Oakley, local food enthusiast and former showrunner (among other roles) for The Simpsons, appeared on KATU to show off some international snacks. Love seeing the reactions from the TV host on the segment. Watch here.

New salad at Fresh Love. I think these guys make some of the best salads in Portland, so I’m always happy to tell you about their newest one. It’s called “Taco ‘Bout a Summer Salad,” (thanks for the clarification, Fresh Love!) made with Urban Acre Homestead salad greens, Hot Mama tortilla chips, pineapple, cucumber, sugar snap peas, sharp cheddar, pickled red onions, avocado, and housemade vegan cilantro jalapeño dressing. Four Things I Learned This Week (June 7)

It’s National Donut Day today! Here’s a map of donut shops in Portland.

OX is closed until July. A Bridgetown Bites tipster sent me this note earlier this week: “OX is closed until Jul 1st. They cancelled all reservations. We drove past it last night and it is fenced off.” The website says, “Ox Restaurant is currently closed for repairs.” Back in March, OX had a fire that “started in the flue of the grill in the first level and extended into the roof structure.” There are a bunch of permits filed with the city for repairs, including work on the roof, ductwork, exhaust, piping, and a new kitchen fire suppression system. We wish them only the best as they work on fixes in order to reopen in a few weeks. 2225 NE Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, Portland

Ranch Pizza and LoRo Coffee are open in Montavilla. They opened their doors yesterday, Thursday, June 6. Taking residence in the former Hungry Heart location, Ranch and LoRo are splitting the space, with coffee in the mornings and pizza later in the day. I stopped in this morning and had a really nice iced latte with almond milk and a piece of their bacon-cheese-potato focaccia. This is a nice addition to the neighborhood. Bonus: I noticed that a beacon light crosswalk is in process of being installed there at Stark and SE 80th Avenue! 7940 SE Stark Street, Portland

Check out the pre-Father’s Day artisan market at STEELPORT Knives this weekend. This is the fourth year they’ve done this event and the place will be full of knives for sale, vendors, music, free custom engravings, a raffle, and more. On the edible side of things look for Flying Fish Co, Jacobsen Salt Co, Kachka, Olympia Provisions, Puff Coffee, Smith Teamaker, The Flavor Society, Vorfruede Dairy Beef, Westward Whiskey, and Wilderton. 1pm to 4pm at their space on NE Sandy Blvd. More details on their Facebook event page. 3602 NE Sandy Blvd, Suite B, Portland

The final countdown is on for JaCiva’s Bakery. Their final day will be Saturday, June 29. About nine months ago the word came out that they were going to close. They continued going, but time is up. They posted on Instagram, “Our building is still for sale but we can no longer realistically operate in a way that is beneficial to both our staff and our customers.”

They added: “Thank you so much for nearly 40 beautiful years. Thank you for allowing us to be apart of your most cherished memories as you celebrated birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, and all of life’s milestones. We have loved making your lives a little sweeter. We are not taking any preorders at this time. All items are first come first served. Please stay tuned on our social media accounts and our website for any updates as we navigate these final weeks. We love you!” 4733 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland

Four Things I Learned This Week (May 31)

Water Avenue Coffee is served at The People’s Courts. I was very happy to learn this news and it makes me want to check out The People’s Courts even more. They posted a video of their cafe space, and it looks nice. Also, know that you can go to The People’s Courts and just enjoy their food and drink without playing sports there. In their FAQ they say, “You are welcome to come eat, drink, watch a game, hang out, etc. without paying any fees.” I wonder if they will show the 2024 Paris Olympics there? 2700 NE 82nd Avenue, Portland

A Fling, a Party, and a Market. There are a bunch of things going on this Saturday, June 1, including the Spring Fling Block Party in Montavilla from noon to 5pm (live music, art, vendors, food at the Rocket Empire Machine food hall, Gigantic Brewing’s tap room); the Parking Lot Party at the pizza cart Reeva starting at 4pm (food, drink, music, vendors); and Rocky Butte Farmers Market‘s first market day of the 2024 season (9am to 1pm) at their new location next to Glenhaven Park. 6935 NE Glisan Street, 7727 NE Sandy Blvd, NE 82nd Avenue and Siskiyou, Portland

Demarco’s Sandwiches is closing. Big bummer for those who love east coast-style sandos: Demarco’s is closing their Division Street location; Saturday, June 30 is the last day you can access their food at that cart at that location. However, they will still do events and catering. So there’s that. And in their words: “COME DOWN AND SAY HELLO SO WE HOPE YOU COME DOWN AND CRUSH US FOR THE NEXT MONTH.” 4606 SE Division Street, Portland

40 LBS Coffee is moving to SW 6th and Washington this summer. It looks like this new location is the Aspect on Sixth building, where FORTE has been (their website says they closed April 30, so just a little over a month ago). According to the 40 LBS Instagram, “Currently we are doing pop-up Tuesday through Thursday from 8-noon, if you are in the area come say hi.” They also talk about construction that will be starting up in a couple of weeks. Four Things I Learned This Week (May 24)

Help Fresh Love feed anyone. This week I learned about Fresh Love‘s project to help people access good food. They keep a gift card that can be used to pay for meals: “When someone comes in who cannot pay, no questions asked, we use this gift card to cover the cost of the bill.” Staff refills the card but you can, too—meaning, you can add to the card as part of your bill when you purchase something at Fresh Love. I think it’s a wonderful thing to do, and so simple. “Thanks so much for your help and let’s keep paying it forward!” 7434 NE Fremont Street, Portland

Adult ice cream social planned at Cafe Rowan. They announced on Instagram their plans to do an “adult ice cream social” in a couple of weeks. Saturday evenings 7pm to 11pm (more or less). “5 ridiculous sundaes, 5 ridiculous cocktails, 5 ridiculous glasses of wine… its gonna be a ridiculously fun time.” 4437 SE Cesar Chavez Blvd, Portland

Jacqueline is rumored to be moving. A Bridgetown Bites tipster sent me this inside tip: “Jacqueline will be moving into the former La Moule/Bakers place at 25th and Clinton, probably around the September timeframe.” I reached out to Jacqueline early this week for more info; I will share anything that I learn from them. You may remember that La Moule closed last July and Baker’s, a “bar with fun food,” took over that space in November 2023, then closed in early 2024. 2500 SE Clinton Street, Portland

Toki will shutter on Sunday, May 26. Right after Sunday brunch service Toki, a downtown Portland restaurant from the Cho family (Han Oak, Jeju), will close. They announced it on Instagram. And while it’s goodbye Toki, they will continue to hone their work at their other restaurants—both in experimenting with new dishes/concepts and returning to things the work for them: “As a collective team at HAN OAK and JEJU we’ll try some new ideas, bring classics back like the KOREAN FRIED CHICKEN with ‘essence of instant ramen’, the CRUNCHWRAP SUPREME, the HANOKONOMIYAKI, and the BAO! We’ll do our best to keep growing, intentionally.” 580 SW 12th Avenue, Portland

Bonus: As you’ve probably heard, Red Lobster filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy this week. I was listening to an NPR story about it and the best thing that came out of the entire piece, IMO, is that Red Lobster put together a playlist of AI-generated music called “Cheddar Bay-I.” I love a good pun (and I love those Cheddar Bay Biscuits, ngl). My first experience with Red Lobster was years ago in Beaumont TX, where when I said I didn’t know what a hush puppy was, they gave me a half dozen on the house, “so you can say you’ve had them.” In the Portland metro area, there are Red Lobsters in Gresham, Tigard, and Vancouver, WA; there does not seem to be any Red Lobsters in Portland proper.
