Portland! It’s where I live, work, and play. It’s where the food news happens (at least most of it). This category is one of the real constants on Bridgetown Bites and is probably a part of almost every post on this blog.
The St. John’s neighborhood is getting a new eatery—Greasers Cafe, a 50s-style diner. It looks like they’ll be taking over the space that Chop St. Johns (famous for their sandwiches) has been in for about 3 years.

Back in 2018, we learned about Flattop & Salamander, a brunch spot that was to open in the Lents neighborhood that September. Fast forward to 2022 and you should see them open in the Buckman neighborhood with a cocktail-heavy menu and brunch stalwarts like french toast and biscuits & gravy.

The French Onion Meatball Sub at Frog & Snail
I don’t remember exactly when I noticed this sandwich on Frog & Snail’s Instagram, but I was instantly intrigued by it: French onion soup in sandwich form. What a great idea! And I finally got a chance to taste this French Onion Meatball Sub last week.

Smart Donkey, a Burrito Beer Garden, is coming to SE Portland. Willamette Week reports that Oswaldo Bibiano of Autentica fame, is opening a burrito beer garden. I love the idea of a beer garden focusing on burritos! It should be open by end of the year. 3420 SE 50th Avenue, Portland
Sayler’s celebrates 75 years. East Portland stalwart Sayler’s Old Country Kitchen is going strong and celebrating 75 years in the steakhouse biz this year (they opened in 1946). From their website: “We’ve been through a lot these past 75 years, a couple of fires, a changing Portland landscape. But we’re still a Portland grown, family owned business. Congrats to Portland Cà Phê for being a finalist in the Best New Cafe category for the 13th Annual Sprudgie Awards (Sprudge is a coffee news and culture website). Back in early October, I wrote about Rotigo, a new “fast-healthy” (they also identify as “fine casual”) counter-service eatery opening up in NW Portland. Originally the place was to open in the fall but according to Portland Monthly, Saturday, December 18 is going to be opening day and more recent reports highlight the rotisserie chicken aspect of the place.
