Portland! It’s where I live, work, and play. It’s where the food news happens (at least most of it). This category is one of the real constants on Bridgetown Bites and is probably a part of almost every post on this blog.
As you may be aware, a new restaurant called 82 Acres is opening soon in the space that used to be home to Quaintrelle, which closed at the end of last year. I had a chance to speak with Emily Everett, the General Manager, and Will Preisch, Executive Chef, to learn more.

A Bridgetown Bites tipster reached out to tell me they had come across a posted liquor license application for a restaurant called Fat Milo’s. They will open up in the old Morchella space, bringing comforting diner food— with ingredients sourced from local farmers and makers—to NE Fremont and 13th Avenue, one of my favorite corners of the city.

Landing Paper Plane’s first fundraiser is March 1. I wrote about Landing Paper Planes at the end of last year—this is the project to open a pay-what-you-can cafe supported by a fine-dining restaurant. They are in fundraising mode and their first one is at the start of March at TaborSpace. It will be a six-course meal (gluten free, with vegan and vegetarian options), with beer, wine, and NA drink options. They’ll also have entertainment and a silent auction.

Changes at the Costco food court. People are very passionate about Costco—members love the rotisserie chickens, the giant packages of TP, and … the food court. Big changes are coming “that has left fans divided.” No, it’s not an increase to the hot dog and soda combo, but the soda will change—they are switching to Coke products and will no longer offer Pepsi products. And maybe higher quality fountain drink dispensers. Multiple locations
K&F Coffee Roasters has closed. A reader emailed me with the following: “Owner of K&F Coffee, Rudy Zarfas, quietly closed his doors last week. The business was struggling ever since the pandemic and with recent rent hikes they could no longer afford to stay open.” I checked the website and it is no longer accessible. Their Instagram says they were the oldest family-owned specialty coffee roaster in Portland; Rudy acquired it in 2019. 2801 SE 14th Avenue, Portland

Earlier today I was able to attend a media preview of the Flock Food Hall, located on the ground floor of the Ritz-Carlton hotel at SW Alder and 9th Avenue. There are eight vendors there offering a variety of cuisines, from Korean fried chicken, to birrieria, to pastries. Plenty of seating, too. Many thanks to Genesis Burton of the Qué Chilero Group, who invited me in connection to her client Pan Roast.

The Wild Bunch, a natural wine event that’s been around since 2020 and is held every March, is back this year. I’m not a wine drinker currently, but I gotta say—the lineup looks amazing.
