National Shutdown: Restaurants Open and Helping in the Portland Metro

Tomorrow—Friday, January 30, 2026—is a National Shutdown day across the country, in response to the killings by ICE. The campaign’s subtitle is “No Work. No School. No Shopping. Stop Funding ICE.” It’s a kind of general strike.

However, in Portland there are a lot of small businesses that simply can’t shut down for the day, due to economic reasons. And while “no shopping” might mean “don’t spend your money anywhere,” it’s generally understood to mean that shopping at small, independent businesses is ok.

Small Bites: Estes Is Moving, Dame, Hey Luigi, and More

Estes is moving to Concordia. The’ve been in residency at Broder Nord since January 2025, and in January 2026 they’ll be moving into their own brick-and-mortar space. Their final day of service at Broder was Wednesday, December 31 and they hope to open at the new location in the second week of January.

That new location is located on NE 30th Avenue just north of Killingsworth, “in the old Nonna space.” But this location has had a more recent tenant, which leads us to …

Via Tinto, a Wine Bar, Has Opened in Troutdale

Via Tinto, a new wine bar, opened their doors earlier this month in downtown Troutdale. Previously this space was home to Grateful Coffee and Flowers, a coffee + plant shop. Via Tinto offers wine, beer, mocktails, nibbles, with the option for guests to bring local dishes in with them from nearby restaurants—all while providing a welcoming and warm atmosphere .

Small Bites: Fiery Crab, Lost Lounge, Krampus, and More

Fiery Crab is coming to Portland. A reader wrote us with this tip, “The old Shari’s on NE 122nd near San Rafael and in the Winco parking lot is becoming a new restaurant. It looked like some work had been happening there, but it had been quiet for a while. Today I saw a sign going up that I think said Fiery Crab.” That matches this Google listing—“temporarily closed” likely means it’s just not open yet.
