Welcome To Portland Salad Week!

Reeva's salad.
One of the most beautiful salads I’ve ever encountered, from Reeva.

Welcome to Portland Salad Week 2025! We’re glad you’re here.

Salad Week logo with dates for 2025.

The last time we did Salad Week was back in 2022, and we are really happy to bring it back again this year. I’m also thrilled that Judith Rich is back and helping immensely in preparing this week of salad. We have another person joining us, too: Bryan Vance from Stumptown Savings. This is a fantastic newsletter that helps you save money at the grocery store. He inspired us to do a tasting of supermarket and grocery store deli salads, which you’ll see later in the week.

But as we start this week that’s all about salad, we thought we’d ask the question, What’s a salad, anyway?

Four Things I Learned This Week (November 18)

Kann is in the news again, and it’s rated the best (plus, Comedor Lilia and Okta). Esquire Magazine released their Best New Restaurants in America, 2022 list, and Kann tops the chart. Congrats to Gregory Gourdet, his staff, and all involved in making this a place where people love to eat Haitian food. Comedor Lilia, part of the República family, also made the list at number 16, which offers “Pacific Northwest cuisine through the lens of a Mexican-American chef.” Okta, in McMinville, which offers a “multi-course experience inspired by the Pacific Northwest,” made the list, too. There’s a lot of interesting sounding restaurants on the list, so be sure to check out all of the places. 548 SE Ash Street (Kann) and 3159 S Moody Avenue (Comedor Lilia), Portland; 618 NE 3rd Street, McMinnville (Okta)

Brunch at Nico’s Cantina for the World Cup. El Mañanero, a new brunch menu for the 2022 World Cup games season, was crated by Chef Fernanda, and it looks great! It will be served every morning they play the WC games over the next month starting next week. I’m particularly happy to see chilaquiles and champurrado on the menu. 4318 NE Cully Blvd, Portland

Chin’s Kitchen is back open for dine-in. I saw this morning that Chin’s Kitchen, home to great dumplings and Dongbei cuisine, has re-opened—and renovated, as well. I’ll be making a visit soon. 4126 NE Broadway, Portland

Deeply Rooted on NE Fremont will open December 10. This sports bar offering plant-based eats is opening in early December, still in time for some of the later matchups during World Cup. Along with their food and drink, you’ll also find pool tables, darts, a golf sim room and … a 200-inch theater screen for big sporting events. That’s seriously huge. NICE. 4765 NE Fremont Street, Portland

Also: Bridgetown Bites will not be publishing next week, the week of Thanksgiving—I’m giving myself some time off. Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Portland Salad Week – Salads We Like, Part One

The title says it all: these are the salads we like in the Portland area. It’s by no means definitive. Want us to know about a salad you like? Fill out this form and we’ll share them at the end of the week.

Caesar Salad: Apizza Scholls

What’s in it: Whole leaf romaine, parmigiano-reggiano, house-made croutons, with house Caesar dressing.

A classic done right, I highly recommend trying Apizza Scholls’ version, which pairs beautifully with any one of their pizza pies. Try it with a meaty sensation such as Apizza Amore or their version of the Amatriciana. The salad dressing is creamy and rich, and a little goes a long way. For those who aren’t anchovy fans, you can ask for them on the side or to simply omit them. –JR

Dumpling Week 2019 in Portland

Pork and Leek Dumplings

The pork and leek dumplings from Chin’s Kitchen.

The Oregonian’s Fifth Annual Dumpling Week is back here in early 2019—get your fill of dough-encased delights for $10 or less from 36 places in Portland from Friday, February 1 to Saturday, February 9. The dumpling passport is back, too: download it here.

You can find the full list of participating restaurants on the Dumpling Week website, (also in map form) but if you’re like me, it will be hard to hit them all. Real talk: even though I focus some of my time on food and eating, I also have a roster of clients who need my time, too. So, if I was to visit one place a day (and twice on the weekend) for the nine days, here’s where I’d go.

Boke Bowl. Szechuan style 5-spice duck dumplings, a fantastic flavor combination. Boke East, 1028 SE Water Ave; Boke West, 1200 NW Northrup. bokebowl.com. Daily 11am-9pm.
