Over the weekend I received an email with the news about the upcoming closure of Backyard Social, a bar and restaurant in North Portland. They will close their doors at the end of August 2025.
It’s true: Spella Caffè at Woodblock Chocolate will close. They are shutting down their cafe operation there (the split is amicable). I’m sorry to pass on this news, since it has been so nice to have them in the Irvington/Sullivan’s Gulch area. Their final day of service will be Sunday, July 27, 2025.

Nelly’s Taqueria gets hyped. I recently came across this video by WhyteFoxx Media on Nelly’s Taqueria, which is located inside Su Casa Supermercado on Stark and 162nd. The video features some of Portland hip-hop musicians asking for and enjoying the special Whyte Foxx Burrito, created by hip-hop artist Whyte Foxx. DJ94 Prynce, Indo Slim, Smurf Luchiano, and Swiggle Mandela all give it a thumbs up. Note: Nelly’s has a sizable number of vegan items on its menu. 16100 SE Stark Street, Portland

Oui Presse is closing …. UPDATE: Well, sort of. After 14 years in business, the original owners sold it to a new owner. Public records indicate that new business was registered as Rose City Pour. Turns out the new owner is keeping the Oui Presse name. The final day of service for the OG Oui Presse will be Saturday, May 31.
No Sabo, which has been in residence (sometimes called a pop-up) at Kaya Cocktail Bar in NE Portland for the past six months, will leave there at the end of the month. They will take over the Lilia Comedor space for a daytime program there in the South Waterfront neighborhood. Lilia Comedor will no longer operate in this location, and is moving to the existing De Noche space in the North Park Blocks.
I sat down with No Sabo’s owners, Jon and Sabrina, to learn more.
