A new bar opening in downtown Portland? Maybe the pandemic really is slowing down. In any case, it’s a good thing—City Bridge & Tunnel, a cocktail bar in the old Shift Drinks space is looking to open this spring, hopefully in March.

Back in 2018, we learned about Flattop & Salamander, a brunch spot that was to open in the Lents neighborhood that September. Fast forward to 2022 and you should see them open in the Buckman neighborhood with a cocktail-heavy menu and brunch stalwarts like french toast and biscuits & gravy.

The Green & Tonic dry cocktail at Mediterranean Exploration Company
Recently I met up with family—my cousin Ryan and his wife Sofie and their kids—for a meal at Mediterranean Exploration Company, and was super delighted to see they offer a dry cocktail, called the Green & Tonic, made with the herb-dominant Seedlip 108.

Earlier this month I learned about Departure Restaurant + Lounge’s new dry menu—AKA nonalcoholic cocktails. It’s a common thing these days for some people to cut out alcohol during the first month of the year, but there are also some of us that simply have a low tolerance for alcohol—being a “lightweight,” to use a term in common parlance. Personally, I love to try drinks made with interesting fruits, juices, essences, and other ingredients untouched by alcohol—it’s an interesting flavor world and you can drink it without having to worry about your blood alcohol level as you head home from the bar.
