Tom McCall Waterfront Park on better days, i.e. no Nazis

As you probably know, bigoted hordes are expected to invade Portland to proclaim their worldview; Antifa is planning on responding. There may be violence. Many Portlanders are wondering what to do about it all—some are choosing to carry on with their lives as planned, some are planning on heading to downtown to either protest or observe.

Dumpling Week 2019 in Portland

Pork and Leek Dumplings

The pork and leek dumplings from Chin’s Kitchen.

The Oregonian’s Fifth Annual Dumpling Week is back here in early 2019—get your fill of dough-encased delights for $10 or less from 36 places in Portland from Friday, February 1 to Saturday, February 9. The dumpling passport is back, too: download it here.

You can find the full list of participating restaurants on the Dumpling Week website, (also in map form) but if you’re like me, it will be hard to hit them all. Real talk: even though I focus some of my time on food and eating, I also have a roster of clients who need my time, too. So, if I was to visit one place a day (and twice on the weekend) for the nine days, here’s where I’d go.

Boke Bowl. Szechuan style 5-spice duck dumplings, a fantastic flavor combination. Boke East, 1028 SE Water Ave; Boke West, 1200 NW Northrup. bokebowl.com. Daily 11am-9pm.

Full disclosure: I attended as media, so my access to the event was comped; however, I admire the work of the Human Rights Campaign, and after seeing them at the event I decided to set up a recurring monthly donation to them.

2017 Oregon Brewers Festival Economic Impact in Portland, and It’s Big

A recent press release from the 2017 Oregon Brewers Festival organizers gave us a summary of the estimated economic impact this annual festival made on Portland this year—and it’s a big one, $23.9 million strong. The three sources taken into account are below.

A Volunteer’s Look Back At Feast Portland 2017

Pioneer Square the morning of Friday’s Grand Tasting—the calm before the storm. Weather was incredible that day.

Well, Feast Portland has come and gone, and my time as a volunteer is over. From all I’ve read and watched—as well as from my own experience—it was a rousing success. Scenes from the four-day food and drink festival were plentiful on social media; it’s no surprise that people were having a great time.
