Four Things I Learned This Week (June 21)

Happy summer! We have crossed the summer solstice and are now officially into summer by the solar calendar (midsummer by the Celtic one). The Oregonian has a listicle of rooftop bars and patios on which to enjoy a meal al fresco.

TANAKA is open in Gresham. This katsu sandwich shop (“Inspired by Osaka. Created in Tokyo. Baked in Portland.”) opened June 14 in the Alta Civic Station building but they have a special through the month of June: “20% off all menu items at TANAKA Gresham from June 14th-30th 2024, Dine-in only, Excludes Retail & Cold Case, Some Exclusions May Apply.” 1493 NW Civic Drive, Gresham

Fundraiser for the Recovery Café Roseway tomorrow. Part of the Recovery Café Network, the Roseway café is hosting a fundraiser for their important work. A Recovery Café is “committed to serving people who have experienced trauma and the results of trauma like homelessness, substance use disorder, addiction, and other mental health challenges.” This fundraiser is Roseway’s first. There, you can enjoy food and drink, live music, and brief program with remarks from Recovery Cafe Network Co-Founder Killian Noe. You can also tour the cafe space: meditation, exercise, and art rooms. Saturday, June 22, 10am to noon . Buy $25 tickets here. 3516 NE 71st Avenue, Portland

Slow Food Portland’s June convivium is next week. I’ve been to a couple of these events and always had a good time. On Wednesday, June 26 the topic will be “Portland’s Farm to Table, the Past and the Future: An Evening with Cory Schreiber.” A James Beard award-winning chef, writer, and teacher, Cory will “share his experiences and insights on the early years of the farm-to-table movement, current trends, and his vision for the future.” Happening at Cookshop. Doors open at 6pm, presentation from 6:30pm to 7:30pm, snacks and beverages available for purchase. More info and (free) ticket link are here. 2625 SE 26th Avenue, Portland

1919 to open in old Sessionable space. A new lounge called 1919 is opening up on Division Street. The idea is that it will be “a public room in which to sit and relax.” Sounds like they want to be a neighborhood local. Work is being done on the interior and I’m looking forward to seeing what they do with the place. 1919’s website, at the writing of this piece, is not accessible, but the domain exists. Sessionable closed in July 2023. Keep up with 1919 on their Instagram. 3588 SE Division Street, Portland

Help Save the Landauer Mercantile Building, Home to Oblique Coffee Roasters

Earlier this month I got an email from a reader:

“Looking to boost this to help out a local small business, a pillar of the community, and a damn fine coffee shop: buried on an Oblique Coffee Roasters’ March 7 Instagram post was a nonfunctioning link to a GoFundMe page. Looks Like they are going to need some assistance to quickly retire debt and save the business … I like Oblique Coffee, it’s a fun, funky space with a whale of a backstory and great music, and I hope this neighborhood gem will be spared from an uncertain fate.”

I reached out to John Chandler (aka Jack), the man behind Oblique, shortly after that and we met for a chat and a great cup of coffee on the topic of the needs behind this fundraiser.

Four Things I Learned This Week (March 15)

Work for Ota Tofu. Over on Craigslist there’s a posting about a job in the early morning, making tofu. That means “operating our soy milk machines and cleaning machines after use” and “scooping and pressing tofu.” Starts at $17/hour. Ota Tofu is the oldest tofu companies in the U.S. and it is excellent. 812 SE Stark Street, Portland

Viking Soul Food is selling their cart at The Bite on Belmont. They’ll be keeping their restaurant in Woodstock, but the cart is for sale. Asking price: $20K. Their goal is to “focus on other opportunities” now that they have a brick and mortar, plus they are looking to do farmers markets, perhaps. As for when they are leaving Belmont, they said on Instagram, “Not entirely sure yet when the last day will be as that will be dependent on when the buyer wants to take over.” 4255 SE Belmont Street, Portland

Cow Bell Cheese Shop is helping the kids. Starting today and going until Sunday, March 17, head to Cow Bell Cheese Shop to participate in a fundraiser for Sunnyside Environmental School’s 8th grade Marine Biology trip to Catalina Island. I have to say, I love the Channel Islands and have great memories of visiting there in my youth—in fact, I played my first ever game of mini golf there on Catalina Island. I remember the water being incredibly clear just off-shore. Anyway, here’s more on the fundraiser:

“We will be donating 20% off our sales from those dates to the program—but more importantly, we are using this as an opportunity to “cheesify” the next generation of potential cheesemongers … We’ll be putting them to work every day of the fundraiser: cutting and wrapping cheese, handing out samples, making and serving fondue. If you enjoy discovering new cheeses at Cow Bell, but you’ve always been slightly disappointed by how tall the cheesemongers are, this is finally our chance to rectify that issue for you.” 231 SE Alder Street, Portland

Brains. BRAINS! Le Clown, which is “celebrating the modern bistronomy of France” there in the Dame Collective, is now offering cervelle: that’s poached brain, beurre citron, fried caper, and fine herbs. “Due to popular demand we’ve done it! We will be offering cervelle in limited quantities on Tuesdays only. Off menu, by request only. Come and get it!” If you like brains, this is a not-miss for you. 5425 NE 30th Avenue, Portland

Bingo Night at My-O-My: Support the Rocky Butte Farmers Market

As many of you know, I love the Rocky Butte Farmers Market and have talked about it on the blog a number of times before. The market season is over, but now ’tis the season for giving—and that includes and opportunity to support this great market serving Northeast Portland neighborhoods, outside of the active market season. To do just that, head to My-O-My this Tuesday evening for bingo night!

Tréla, a Greek Kitchen and Taverna, Has Launched a Kickstarter

Artist’s rendering of Tréla, a Greek taverna planned to open in NE Portland’s North Tabor neighborhood. Photo credit: Tréla

Back in March 2022 I wrote about Tréla, a Greek taverna planning to open on the southeast corner of NE Glisan and 60th Avenue (the former O’Neill Public House). For a long time they seemed—from an outsider’s view—dead in the water. But about a month ago, their social media woke up and they have continued to post there. Most recently they announced a Kickstarter, which at the time of the writing of this article, has raised a little over $800 with 36 more days to go.
