Earlier in January, a reader emailed me with questions about Caffe and Barba Mingo. They had become aware of the property potentially being developed and was concerned about its future. In the words of the band that shares the same name, “I’m here without you, baby, but you’re still on my lonely mind”: the 3 Doors Down Cafe has closed. Active since the 1990s, this is another instance of “old Portland” leaving—and yet another restaurant closure in these strange economic times.

Sebastiano’s—that wonderful Sicilian/Italian-American shop, bakery, and deli that started out in Montavilla in 2020—has fully moved to Sellwood. Their grand opening is Thursday, March 7, but they had a soft opening today. I stopped by and was so happy to see how the business has been able to expand and flourish in this much larger space on SE 13th Avenue.

The news of Cooperativa’s closing has made the rounds in local food media this week, and said news remains an unfortunate reality. Cooperativa was—IS—an important part of the new-ish Italian market scene here in Portland, and it’s departure will leave a big hole in the city’s food scene. This is their final week; they close Saturday, September 3.

Capitola Coffee’s new location.
Although this has been a light content week, a variety of tidbits crossed my desk this week, so instead of Four Things for Friday, here are some small bites.
Celebrate with Capitola tonight. Capitola Coffee is hosting an open house party tonight: “Hey friends we are hosting an open house along with Waechter Architecture to launch the opening of our new space. We hope you can stop by on Friday, July 8 from 6 pm to midnight.” This is kind of a big deal, as Capitola is located in an all wood CLT building. Their soft opening is planned for mid-July with full opening in August. 4224 N Mississippi Avenue, Portland
