Last month I stopped in at Recess, the restaurant in the new Cambria Hotel located in the Pearl District. They opened this past August 7. I had a chance meet the staff, hear about their work, and see what they are bringing to the neighborhood—especially when it comes to food and drink. Here’s what I learned during that visit.

The address 330 NW 10th Avenue for a number of years was known as the location of Isabel, a popular Latin-Asian fusion restaurant. But, according to ORSOS records, it will be the future home to a new restaurant from Chookiat Saenguraiporn, the Thai restauranteur who is behind a handful of popular eateries in Portland. Update 7/28/25: The restaurant’s name is Guay Tiew (registered under KUAY TIEW, LLC; the first word is often spelled in English as “guay.”)

A new bar called Side Eye will open in the Nob Hill section of NW Portland, right next to Cinema 21 on 21st Avenue. While it was most recently home to Round Here, it’s probably best known as the location of Muu-Muu’s. I spoke with Quinn Matthewstearn to learn more.

In what feels a little like a shock to the Portland’s restaurant system, three restaurants/bars have announced closings in the last week: Bar Asha, Zula, and XO Bar. Honestly, I cover closings throughout the year but this seems like a lot.

Thanks to a Bridgetown Bites tipster, I’ve learned that new wine and Japanese-inspired listening bar called Fancy Baby is going to open in the Pearl District. This location on NW Glisan used to be home to CULT, a store that sold art, collectibles, ephemera, and more.
