Back in February, my friend Judith raved about the bagels she got from Red Hen Bagelry. She said, “Best bagels I’ve had in a looooong time.” We both lived in NYC for a number of years and ate our share of bagels during that time. So I would say we’ve had solid experiences with NYC-style bagels enough to know what is good and what is not.

I reached out to Deirdre Tipley, owner at Red Hen Bagelry, to learn more about their bagels and their business, and we had a nice chat on a rainy morning at Sebastiano’s in Sellwood.

Malpractice, a Cocktail Popup, Will Open a Brick & Mortar in Portland

Malpractice, a cocktail bar that has operated as a popup since 2022, will open a brick & mortar location in the old Grape Ape space in SE Portland. In their drink-making they will implement modernist techniques, use fermented foods, and include ingredients like matcha and mushrooms along with high-quality spirits.

It’s another Small Bites Friday—let’s go!

Fire at Caffe and BARba Mingo forces them to close. Terrible news this week: these popular Italian restaurants “sustained major damage” in a fire on early Monday morning. Thankfully, nobody was injured, but the restaurants will be closed indefinitely. “The Mingo family is eternally grateful for your love and support in this most difficult time. Finché c’è vita c’è speranza – As long as there is life there is hope. Moully’s Will Join Carnelian Coffee With Wine

Last week I had a chance to speak with Sarah Dubrule about her new project called Moully’s. It will be a kind of a weekly wine pop-up at the new location of Carnelian Coffee in SE Portland’s Foster-Powell neighborhood. Moully’s will offer wines by the glass and bottle, as well as nibbles, and a chance for neighbors to have a local spot where they can have a glass and relax.
