Last week Baka Umai (soft) opened their second location in Northwest Portland. Affectionately called the Ramen Den, they offer their same creative dishes in a new, cozy space—which previously was the second location of Grant’s Philly Cheesesteaks. I spoke with one of Baka Umai’s owners, Robert Greenup, recently to find out more about the Baka Umai Ramen Den. Here’s what I learned.

Matsunoki Ramen Expands to North Portland

Matsunoki Ramen, currently located in the Pine Street Market food hall downtown, is expanding. They’ll be opening in North Portland into the old XO Bar space on North Fremont Street. They’ll continue offer a variety of ramen dishes, including vegetarian and vegan options, rice bowls, and more.

Small Bites – Closings, Openings, Dumplings, and More

Welcome to a new edition of Small Bites, filled with tidbits and short news items. I’ve felt a little distracted lately, so this post serves, in part, as a place to store recent Portland food news. First, we’ll start with closures.

Closing or Shuttered. It’s hard to say goodbye to quality restaurants in this town, but it happens. Already closed are Grain & Gristle, Rabbits Cafe Killingsworth, and previously reported Rockabilly Cafe. Lokanta is in process of closing.

Yokohama Skyline Eatery Opens in NE Portland’s Yard Building

An eagle eye’d Bridgetown Bites reader alerted me to the opening of Yokohama Skyline Eatery that is now open (soft opening phase) in the Yard building there by the Burnside Bridge. This is ramen shop (ramen-ya) offering a small but well-curated menu. The space was formerly home to BKK Thai.
