The other day, Jake Flanagan from Saraveza emailed me with the news that now you can get their pizzas at Living Häus Beer’s taproom in Southeast Portland. This is the same location that has been host to Whit’s Pizza Pies, but Whit is currently undergoing cancer treatment and had to take a pause on his pizza work. Selling their tavern-style pies under the Bad Habit moniker, the Saraveza team is keeping Whit’s seat warm until his glorious return.

But I wanted to learn more, so Jake and I had a chat about their residency, their tavern-pies, Far Cry, and more. Here’s part of our conversation.

Giuseppe’s Italian Restaurant has closed. I learned about the closing of this longtime (39 years) Italian restaurant after I published last week’s Small Bites, so I didn’t include it then, so I’m including it now. But yes, this beloved restaurant is now closed.

Last Saturday, someone on Facebook posted this: “Met up with family today at 11am to order a few last Pizza’s. There is NO parking in their huge lot, and there are people parking in the business next door. There’s a line 2hrs deep to place an order. And just heard at 12:35, they are done taking orders for the day.” The end of an era and many will miss it. 17937 SE Stark Street, Portland

Small Bites: Yanni’s, Pizza, Strawberries, Matcha, Aurora, and More

Strawberries from Pablo Munoz Farm, purchased at the Rocky Butte Farmers Market.
It’s strawberry season!

Yanni’s Greek Donuts grand opens this weekend. I mentioned this loukoumades cart back in February, run by a couple of brothers named Theo and Luke, who grew up here in Portland. They passed on the news that they are having a party on Saturday from 6pm to 10pm to celebrate their grand opening. Find them in the parking lot of the Lucky Lab on SE 9th and Madison.

They will offer up fresh loukoumades, a pita souvlaki special, beer, cider, wine, and Greek dancing. It’s great to see more Greek food happening in Portland, with Yanni’s joining this new scene of Greek spots including Tréla, Yiayia’s, and Souvlaki Queen. 1400 SE 9th Avenue, Portland
