Thanksgiving 2021 in Portland

Thanksgiving is basically just around the corner and in the world of food media, that means it’s time to publish Thanksgiving food and meal roundups. The big kids in town have done a lot of the digital legwork, for which I’m grateful, and you can find their full lists here:

There’s a lot to choose from. I’d summarize the lists as this: Portland Monthly’s list is a small, well-curated list; Eater’s is diverse; EverOut’s is extensive, including meals and baked goods. There is some overlap but they aren’t identical, which is a good thing.

Looking through these lists, there’s plenty of deliciousness, but here are the things that really stand out for me, plus some of my own additions.

Small Bites: Pumpkin Edition

The fall weather has arrived and that means it’s time for fall flavors—including pumpkin. Savory or sweet, it tastes like autumn, and for me the season is incomplete without it. Here are some pumpkin (and more) foods you can get in Portland that I think sound particularly good.

Bakeshop. Their Caramelized Apple and Pumpkin Hand Pie is superb (I had one a couple of weeks ago) and can be ordered on the website for the weekend (when Bakeshop is open these days). Warning: this pastry is very flaky, so you might find yourself covered in delicious, delicious pastry shards while eating it. 5351 NE Sandy Blvd, Portland

Four Things I Learned This Week (February 5)

Ben & Esther’s, which is now fully vegetarian, announced that their “soon-to-be-famous vegan cinnamon rolls” will launch this Saturday—that’s tomorrow. In the words of the owner, “Come get some. Don’t be a crazy person.” 6912 NE Sandy Blvd, Portland

Vivienne is making what they call “baby cakes,” which are literally small-sized layer cakes: “That absolutely delicious and adorable Baby Cake is black and white this week. That is, the best chocolate cake layers filled in the center and wrapped in vanilla buttercream and rainbow sprinkles. This cake serves two big pieces or 4 perfect mini pieces.” 4128 NE Sandy Blvd, Portland

Sebastiano’s is expanding their cheese program, stocking “a selection of Italian cheeses that are curated, cut-and-wrapped by the team at Cowbell.” Like a lot of us, the closure of Cheese Bar on Belmont was a very sad thing, so it’s good to see other places stepping into that void. Sebastiano’s will be consulting with Portland’s favorite cheesemonger Steve Jones, owner of the late great Cheese Bar, on their own cheese program. 411 SE 81st Avenue, Portland

Did you know you can get freshly made perogies every Saturday? Head to St. John the Baptist Ukranian Orthodox Church on Saturdays from 11am to 2pm. Along with perogies, you can pick up stuffed cabbage and sausages—enjoy them hot or take home frozen items for later. 8014 SE 16th Avenue, Portland

Four Things I Learned This Week (January 31)

Welcome to the end of what has seemed like a very long January. Here are the four things I learned this week in world of Portland food.

Beewing reopens tomorrow (Feb 1). After many months, Beeswing will reopen in their new space in Sellwood. I won’t deny it—I was really hoping they’d stay in Cully, but I’m sure there’s a “rest of the story” as to what went into them relocating so far away. I’m a Kickstarter backer, so I look forward to cashing in on my pledge for brunch. Observations TK. Here’s their latest update:

Thank you so much for your generosity in supporting the reopening of Beeswing! We have finished our build-out and are excited to be ready to serve you again. We are so humbled by the support we have received, we cannot begin to express the gratitude and excitement we feel right now! We will be reopening on FEBRUARY 1st in Sellwood when you come in to eat make sure to say hello, you are all a part of the Beeswing family now!

Pearl Bakery will reopen, too. Good news about this beloved Portland bakery. In a comment on their Instagram they said this, “Pearl Bakery is undergoing reorganization…” You can sign up on their website to get updated on their impending reopening.

Ezell’s Famous Chicken is coming to Tigard. Apparently it’s Oprah’s favorite. It will open on Tuesday, February 4 near the Washington Square Mall, 10218 SW Washington Square Road in Tigard.

Sicilian food is coming to Montavilla. New Sicilian deli Sebastiano’s is opening in the old Heartbreaker Neighborhood Kitchen space (411 SE 81st Avenue). The Sicilian pizza they will offer will no doubt be worth checking out, but I’m excited about the possibility of cassata, a traditional Sicilian cake that involves sponge cake, sweetened ricotta, marzipan, and candied fruit. I may be eschewing added sugars these days but I’ll take a break from that to try this wonderful traditional sweet that I miss so much.
