Small Bites: Old Pal Will Close, Oysters, Bar Carlo, and More

Old Pal will close, but oysters are still available until then.

Old Pal will close. They’ve decided to close the restaurant and put more energy into their catering side, Field Day Feasts & Gatherings. Their final time of service will be New Year’s Eve.

“Old Pal has been so much more than a restaurant to us. It’s been a place to gather, celebrate, connect, and be part of a neighborhood we love so much. We’re endlessly grateful for every meal shared, every familiar face, every new friend, and especially the incredible team who have helped make Old Pal what it is. We couldn’t have done any of this without you.”

Until then, they will operate Wednesdays through Sundays, 4pm to 9pm; enjoy $2 oysters every night; December 13 will be the date of their final annual holiday market. They will be missed. 3350 SE Morrison Street, Portland.

Spielman Bagels Will Open in Old Jim & Patty’s Space on NE Fremont

Interesting news in light of the renaming of Spielman Bagels on SE Division as Ricky’s—indeed the old Jim & Patty’s on NE Fremont will become … a new Spielman Bagels location. I predicted it earlier this year and it’s satisfying to see that come true.

Ricky’s Is a New Bagel Shop Taking Over the Division Spielman Location in Portland

Earlier this month I learned that the SE Division location of Spielman Bagels & Coffee will soon have a new name: Ricky’s. The source of this news? Owner Raf Spielman himself. We chatted on the phone about what’s to come, and learned a bit of Spielman history, as well. Here’s what we talked about.

Small Bites: Cannoli, The Richmond Bar, The Deck, and More

Sunday is for cannoli at Cartopia. Over at the Cartopia food pod Holy Shannoli is doing a cannoli pop-up on Sunday from noon to 8pm. You can see their menu here—much more elaborate than the traditional cannoli decorated with chocolate chips, nuts, or candied citrus peel. 1207 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland

It’s-It Club Pivots, Long Live It’s-It Club!

I developed a taste for It’s-It ice cream sandwiches when I lived in the Bay Area in the 1990s, so when I discovered they were accessible here via the It’s It Portland Club, it gave me a lot of joy. They really are a taste of the region, and even just hearing the name brings back a lot of good memories. So I was sorry to hear about the (un)official end of the Club, but happy to hear It’s-It Club will live on at Spielman Bagels.
