The Paris Theatre is the future home to Can Can Culinary Cabaret in Portland.
The other day a colleague mentioned that the Can Can Culinary Cabaret is set to open in Portland. I did a little research and saw that the last article on their Portland plans was back in 2022. So I thought, why not reach out to them and see where they are with everything? I had a great conversation with Chris Pink, Can Can’s executive director. Here’s what I learned.
The exterior of the two buildings that will be home to the James Beard Public Market
Last week I had a chance to join local media for an early site visit at the James Beard Public Market. These two buildings—the ground floor of the 100-year old Selling Building at SW 6th and Alder (610 SW Alder) and its neighbor, the old Rite-Aid (622 SW Alder)—will bring a world-class public market back to Portland. And it was pretty cool to see the insides and envision what is to come.
NOTE: These interiors are very rough and in a pre-construction shape, so keep that in mind.
An excellent cappuccino I had recently at Juniors on NE Prescott.
For whatever reason, coffee news is big this week. I love coffee and had a great latte from the good folks at Case Study (NE Sandy Blvd) this morning. As for the news, there are tidbits on Coava, Denizens Cafe, Barista and Roseline, and Ben & Esther’s (who serve coffee).
Thanks to a photo from Iain MacKenzie, aka @maccoinnich, I’ve learned that Nuvrei is opening a new location in downtown Portland’s west end. It’s that building on the corner of SW Harvey Milk and SW 12th Avenue. Among others, Bamboo Sushi The Annex was at this location for a time.
It’s no myth, but kids generally don’t (yet) love salad. And while some vegetable salads are an exception, it’s usually the fruit salads that get all the cheers. It’s great to see when restaurants in Portland offer a nice fruit salad to go with a kid entree instead of the usual suspects such as french fries, chips, or tater tots. But where do you find a great fruit salad? For starters, you can make one at home. Here’s my take on heartier fruit salad that features cantaloupe, pieces of prosciutto, fresh strawberries, and some basil. As you can see, it was a hit!
And now without further ado, here is a roundup of Portland restaurants that will surely attract those young palates with a fresh, delicious, and seasonal fruit salad.
Cubo de Cuba
I’m a big fan of Cubo and have been coming here with my family for years. It’s great that they can make any bowl, plate, or sandwich kid friendly (see above!) and while they don’t serve a traditional fruit salad, their Caribbean salad is one to try. If your kid likes mango (and both of mine do), they’ll appreciate this vibrant salad, which in addition to mango also boasts brined cucumbers, avocado and lime juice. So fresh and so yummy!
