Four Things I Learned This Week (May 13)

CityMaxx indeed filed for bankruptcy. I had heard over the months that one of my favorite stores, CityMaxx, had closed, but I didn’t realize they had filed for bankruptcy. Back in February, the Portland Business Journal reported this: “City Maxx LLC filed for voluntary Chapter 7 bankruptcy protection Feb. 11, 2022, in the District of Oregon. The debtor listed an address of 3552 SE 122nd Ave., Portland, and is represented in court by attorney Ted A. Troutman. City Maxx LLC listed assets ranging from $100,001 to $500,000 and debts ranging from $1,000,001 to $10,000,000. The filing did not identify a largest creditor.” It’s really too bad—city employees said there were not plans to move to another area to open. There are other places, but CityMax was bright, welcoming, and filled with delicious things. RIP CityMaxx. 3552 SE 122nd Avenue, Portland

Tito’s Taquitos is back! H/T Bill Oakley for this news—one of the highest-regarded food carts in the area is back, and reopened yesterday, May 12. They are in Beaverton these days, offering up their same delicious eats. Look for them in the “76 Station lot.” Check out their menu, here. 3975 SW Beaverton Hillsdale Hwy, Beaverton

Chokladbollar in Portland. When I lived in NYC, I loved stopping by the nearby FIKA (on Park Ave South, now closed along with the other FIKAs in the city) especially during the “3pm slump.” One of the things they offered, among their excellent taste treats, were chokladbollars. So imagine my delight when I saw that Flour Market is making them! They are a wonderful mix of sweet chocolate, oats, and coffee, rolled up and coated in coconut. Absolutely delicious. 5507 NE 30th Avenue, Portland

The Sudra closes their Pearl location. Sad news from The Sudra: “Unfortunately we have made the difficult decision to close our Pearl District location. Staffing issues, lack of business, and sickness has made it overwhelmingly difficult to keep this location open.” Rough, but I hope it relieves some of the stress of the folks behind the restaurant. 100 NW 10th Avenue, Portland

Four Things I Learned This Week (November 15)

It’s been a crazy week in Bridgetown Bites land, but I still have time to share with your four things I learned this week. It’s straight up restaurant news, and good stuff, at that.

Chameleon has a new menu. According to their Facebook page, Hollywood District mainstay Chameleon has a new menu. Owner Pat Jeung is back in town after some culinary travels: “After my little adventure to the middle east and Europe, I had an amazing time and got to cook with the locals in Beirut and Bucharest. Met some incredible new friends and feeling so grateful to be able to do what I do. Please come by soon to sample some of our new dishes on our menu!”

Brunch arrives at the Goat. Hogan’s Goat Pizza is now offering brunch. There are a number of egg dishes on the menu, but what caught my eye was the Breakfast Lasagna: “Eye opener lasagna featuring a crispy tater crust, layered with scrambled eggs, bacon, Italian sausage, and cheddar cheese. Accompanied by tomato slices.”

The Sudra has reopened on 28th Ave. According to their Instagram page, they are open in the new location: “We’re open! More space! New menu items! Same Sudra staff that you know & love.” They are now occupying the space that was home to Tapalaya for years, 28 NE 28th Avenue.

Wajan serves lunch! This wonderful new Indonesian restaurant has launched their lunch service. Stop by on Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday from 11:30am to 2:30pm.

Four Things I Learned This Week (September 20)

It’s here! Here are four things I learned this week in Portland food.

Old news, with an update. It was reported a little while back that The Sudra, a vegan Indian restaurant—that makes some of the most flavorful food in town— is going to open up in the Revere building on N Mississippi. The new detail is that they plan to be open there around November.

Changes at Nonna. Italian comfort food resto Nonna will close its doors on September 28 as a restaurant. Then the transition:  “After more than five years of happily dishing up creative Italian comfort food and cocktails in the Concordia neighborhood, Nonna Tavern will stop serving nightly dinner and re-boot as a multi-use catering kitchen, parties, educational workshop and collab pop-up event space.” To get your last plates of their delicious food, head over on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday nights, 5pm till close. I look forward to seeing what the changes bring to the neighborhood.

Cider Riot is for sale. Sounds like a sad but sound financial decision. “Goldman-Armstrong said a costly expansion in 2016 coupled with cider sales below what he and his investors had projected left them with little choice other than to put their facility, equipment and brand on the market.

Bankrupt but not closing. Kenny & Zuke’s deli will file for bankruptcy—Chapter 11. They will reorganize and pay off their mountainous debt… but they are not closing. According to the owner, they are “absolutely [in] no danger of closing, or curtailing operations in any way.” The yums will keep coming.
