Rosh Hashanah 2026—New Year 5787—in Portland

Rosh Hashanah 2026 kind of snuck up on us this year, seemingly kind of early, starting the evening of Friday, September 11. This also means that Rosh Hashanah falls on the sabbath/shabbos, which for some Jewish communities can mean that the shofar will not be blown on that first night, and will be delayed to the following day of Rosh Hashanah (the holiday lasts until Sunday, September 13).

It’s the Jewish New Year, which means apples and honey, honey cake, and other things to mark the wishes for a sweet year to come. Here are some ways to enjoy a delicious Rosh Hashanah. Small Bites: Last Raclette, Sicilian Nachos, FIKA, DST, and More

Last raclette of the season is next week. Head to Mayfly on Friday, March 13 to “celebrate the end of winter with one last, gloriously, deliciously, cheesy gathering!” Tickets are $35 (adults) and $8 (kids over 3-years old). The dinner will take place in a long communal table in a heated tent.

Small Bites: Yanni’s, Pizza, Strawberries, Matcha, Aurora, and More

It’s strawberry season!

Yanni’s Greek Donuts grand opens this weekend. I mentioned this loukoumades cart back in February, run by a couple of brothers named Theo and Luke, who grew up here in Portland. They passed on the news that they are having a party on Saturday from 6pm to 10pm to celebrate their grand opening. Find them in the parking lot of the Lucky Lab on SE 9th and Madison.

They will offer up fresh loukoumades, a pita souvlaki special, beer, cider, wine, and Greek dancing. It’s great to see more Greek food happening in Portland, with Yanni’s joining this new scene of Greek spots including Tréla, Yiayia’s, and Souvlaki Queen. 1400 SE 9th Avenue, Portland

Restaurants Opening in Portland in 2025: What We’re Looking Forward To

I thought I’d take a little time to share some of the restaurants opening in Portland in 2025 that I am particularly looking forward to. As we move further away from the pandemic—though COVID is not gone, by any means—I have hopes that its volatility that affected the city’s restaurants for too long is truly in the rearview mirror. And that other issues (like break-ins) can be addressed by our new city council. This year’s list includes a public market, a new coffee shop, Indigenous fine dining, and more.
