I was chatting with a neighbor the other day and she said, “I look forward to using that new app launched by Portlanders to help you find mocktails.” And I was all, whaaaa?!? This sounds awesome! “I don’t know this mocktail app! What is it called?” It’s called BuzzCutt and it’s arriving later in 2023.
As someone who doesn’t drink, but who loves cocktails, I am always open to hearing about places that serve good quality non-alcoholic drinks—call them “zero proof,” “dry cocktails,” or “mocktails,” I am here for them. Sure, club soda and a lime is nice, but an expertly crafted mocktail is a beautiful thing. BuzzCutt has my number.
BuzzCutt’s Background
The premise is simple: this app can help you locate establishments (bars and restaurants) that offer non-alcoholic drinks. The founders of BuzzCutt, Sarah and Olivia Sears, spoke to Willamette Week about the app, and answered the question, “How will BuzzCutt work? Will you put in a ZIP code and it shows you bars and restaurants with N/A beers in the area?” their response? “Exactly.”
Right now they are cataloging all the different non-alcoholic brands. When they are satisfied with this phase of the project, they’ll hand that data over to their team of developers (Approachable Geek), which will then code and design the app. It’s expected that development will happen from March to May/June, with a launch in summer 2023.
BuzzCutt’s Fundraisers
While we wait for BuzzCutt to be born, there are a couple of fundraisers being planned. On Saturday, January 21, they will launch their Indiegogo fundraiser, and on Saturday, January 28 from noon to 5pm there will be a live event at Victoria Bar in North Portland. The event is free to attend but you’ll need a ticket (via Eventbrite—reserve your spot here).
At this event on the 28th, there will be Portland-based artists, NA beverage brands (look to BuzzCutt’s Instagram for mentions of some of the vendors involved), vegan-forward food, DJ Jess The Ripper providing tunes, a raffle featuring Joyus, Wilderton, and Athletic product and BuzzCutt swag—and some NA (and alcohol-based) drinks whipped up by the Victora Bar folks. Donations—this is a fundraiser, after all—are welcome.
I applaud the Searses and their team for creating an app that will be so useful to so many—whether you are sober, sober-curious, on limiting prescription drugs (hi), or just plain don’t want to drink booze at any particular moment. I’m looking forward to attending the event and downloading this app when available.
Only good wishes to the BuzzCutt family as they make their way down the path to their app!
