There are a lot of food festivals in Portland but the Soup Festival (AKA Winter Soup Festival) is one of the tastiest. I’ve attended in the past and have tasted a number of delicious soups, and am eager to return for more. This year, the festival is Wednesday, January 25 to Sunday, January 29, all taking place at the Portland Mercado.
Here are some of the soups you can enjoy at the festival:
- Alecocina: TBD
- Tierra Del Sol: Pozole Estilo Oxaca | Birria de Res.
- La Carreta Pura Vida: Albondigas de Res | Albondigas de Pollo. A meatball soup prepared with fresh vegetables and either beef broth with beef meatballs or chicken soup with chicken meatballs; both options are accompanied with rice. “Traditional from Costa Rica.”
- Principe Maya: TBD
- Tita’s Kitchen: Sopa a la Minuta. Ground beef, traditional Peruvian spices, and angel hair pasta in a milky broth of whipped eggs. “This mouth-watering blend is known for warming your soul on a cloudy day.”
- Havana Station: Ajiaco Cubano. Slowly cooked with root vegetables, secret seasonings, meats, and vegetables. “One of the emblematic dishes of Cuban cuisine, known internationally as the Cuban soup.”
- Fernando’s Allegria: Chicken Tortilla Soup. Shredded chicken soup, topped with tortilla chips, pico de gallo, sour cream, and cheese.
- Qué Bacano: Ajiaco Bogotano. Chicken, three varieties of potatoes, corn, and Guascas (Colombian spice). It is served with rice, avocado, capers, and cream. “One of the most typical Colombian soups.”
- XŎCOTL: Sopa de Hongos Estilo Mazateco. Mix of wild and cultivated mushrooms in veggie broth with herbs and a hint of chile de arbol.

You can head to the Mercado’s Soupfest page for more photos of the soups, and additional details (social, website, etc). Additionally, you can either order your soup there at the festival or pre-order for pick up via the variety of apps that are out there. The festival runs from 11am to 8pm each day.
Finally, you’ll have the opportunity to vote for your favorite soup for a chance to win a $100 gift card to the Portland Mercado! Entries will be collected via scannable QR code on site.
This should be a delicious festival and I hope you will make a stop there for something good to eat!
