In my inbox was the news from a Bridgetown Bites reader that The Ranger Station has closed as of March 1, 2023. They directed me to the bar’s announcement on Instagram: “Hey Friends! We want to thank everyone for a great 9 years (yes 9!) on 43rd and Hawthorne. As of March 1st we will no longer be at this location.”
They have been offering food and drink at this spot since 2014 (read about their early days in this 2014 Southeast Examiner article), as well as live music. In fact, they only recently brought back live music last fall, so this cuts into the live music scene in Portland. Their closing also cuts access to their popular Philly Cheesesteak, too, as well as a pub menu that appealed to all sorts of tastes. I have not had their sandwich but I admire folks who attempt to make cheesesteaks outside of Philly.
Our tipster talked to someone close to the business and heard that the owner, Matt Walker, is taking a break from running a bar. And good news: He wants to re-open eventually in a larger space with a bigger stage. So that’s something to look forward to.
The other bit of news is that there are plans to turn the space into a Thai restaurant. Niramon Wungjiranirun and Sutee Wungjiranirun are the owners of the building, but it is unclear if they themselves are opening the restaurant. I’ll keep an eye on it.

Funny, there just so happens to be a larger space with a bigger stage just down the road on Burnside that sounds like it will be vacant later this year. Turns out the existing decor may also fit well with the lodge/woodsy vibe of Ranger Station…
That is a very good point. I felt very “surprised pikachu” when reading this. I hope the Ranger Station folks feel like looking into it.
