About a week ago as I was driving home from my acupuncture appointment, I noticed that the Sandino Brothers Coffee cafe on NE Sandy Blvd near 58th Avenue was all papered up, and that usually means something is up. Turns out it is—they are shutting down business at the coffee shop and continuing their coffee farming work down in Nicaragua.
On February 20 they posted on Instagram, “Big things are happening! We will be closed for a remodel this week! Hopefully opening back up on Saturday 2/25. We’ll keep you updated!” but it was clear that they were not open. I sent a message that morning but got no response. And today they posted:
“After 12 years in the coffee business we regret to let you know we are closing down. It was a great adventure and we learned a lot and met great people along the way. Thank you for supporting us during these times. My brother and I will continue farming great coffee in Nicaragua. Muchas gracias a todos!!!!”
In the comments someone asked about the cafe space on NE Sandy, and the response was “There will be a new coffee shop. New owner is from Ethiopia.” The name of the business is Emama Yibebe Coffee.
Best of luck to the Sandino brothers as they move on and continue their coffee work in Nicaragua. I am very much looking forward to checking out the cafe from Emama Yibebe Coffee, too. Ethiopia has a centuries-old tradition of coffee production, and a cafe featuring Ethiopian coffee is something to get excited about.
