As I’ve mentioned before here, I am involved with the Rocky Butte Farmers Market (RBFM) as a contributing writer, and I wanted to bring your attention to a post I wrote about a great program with the RBFM, the new Community Table.
To be honest, when I read about the Community Table—where backyard gardeners can have space to sell their surplus harvest at the Market—it reminded me of the “gardeners market” that operated at the Parkrose Marketplace. Parkrose Marketplace is on hiatus this year, and there is definitely room for others to run with the idea—which is a really good one. Here’s how it works after you become a Community Table vendor:
“As a vendor through the Community Table program, you will be given a partial booth space and the fee is 20% of total sales. After using the Community Table five times during one market season, you’ll have a chance to check in with market staff and see if moving up into the standard vendor space would be a good fit.”
This is a great opportunity for those who want to experience what it’s like to sell at a farmers market, and learn some marketing skills while you’re at it.
So if you’d like to participate, read the full procedures and rules to get an idea of what to expect. And when you’re ready to commit as a vendor at the Community Table, just sign-up using the Market’s Google form. If you have questions, concerns, or really anything on your mind that has to do with the Community Table, email the Market staff at managers@rockybuttemarket.com.
As I walk around Portland I see some amazing—and expansive—edible gardens out there. I definitely recommend that you consider joining the Community Table! And also remember: opening day for the Rocky Butte Farmers Market is Saturday, June 3 at 9pm.
