Today I learned that the Rocky Butte Farmers Market—which has a new location this season—is hiring an Assistant Market Manager for the market. This position requires a physical presence at each of the market Saturdays, plus you get to be in the middle of the action, working with a stellar staff. Pay is $18/hour.
Aside: at first I thought, “OMG Marcy is leaving?!?” Then I saw the “assistant” part of “assistant market manager” and was all “whew.” Marcy is awesome and it would be great to work with her.
Job Requirements
So, what does the Assistant Market Manager do?
- Assist Marcy (the market manager) with setup and breakdown of the market. It takes some strength: you’ll have to be able to lift up to 50 pounds in all sorts of weather (the proverbial “rain or shine.”)
- You’ll manage the token booth station each market Saturday. This means you’ll get to know the market currencies and learn how to process transactions. Overall, you’ll be responsible for keeping the market currencies secure. Note: The use of a tablet will be required.
- Finally, you’ll get to assist the market manager with other market operations during the market day as needed. This is a chance to learn all sorts of things, continue to hone your interpersonal skills, and problem solve.
Your Strengths and Interests
What you’ll bring to this position is your passion for farmers markets, which includes an interest in local food systems, agriculture, and supporting local businesses. You’ll be friendly, thoughtful, and consistently courteous to market shoppers, vendors, and other community members. It also helps to value an attention to detail and be computer literate.
The Rocky Butte Farmers Market season runs from June 1 to September 28, 2024.
So, are you ready to apply? Send a resume to rockybuttemarket@gmail.com, and be sure to check the job listing page for additional key elements to know before you apply. Good luck!
