Bobacat Teahouse Will Open in Irvington

The other day I got a call from Mr. Bites while he was on a break at work, telling me that a customer told him that a teahouse was opening in the old Petisco space. A few days later I went to go check it out, and learned that Bobacat Teahouse is set to open at that location.

First, a little about Petisco, in case you missed their closing. They shuttered in mid-February after 15 years in business. They have done at least one paella pop-up elsewhere since they closed, but seemingly not much more than that. A new tea place will definitely have a different vibe than the European cafe feel that Petisco valued.

Drinks at Bobacat Teahouse

Although I have not been to a Bobacat Teahouse (they currently have a location on SW Broadway), I do like their motto, “Keep Calm and Purr On.” Milk tea makes up a large amount of their menu, and are listed as the most popular drinks, including Bobacat Milk Tea Brown Sugar, Taro Milk Tea, Thai Milk Tea, and Jasmine Milk Tea.

Other tea drinks include their Refresher series of iced teas without milk, straight up brewed tea (oolong, jasmine, assam, and green), and flavored teas. Aside from tea, there are lattes and Fresh Milk, which looks like fruit topped with milk. Drinks come iced (if you want anything hot, it’s an additional dollar) and along with dairy milk you can get soy, oat or almond milk. Lactose-free milk is also available in some cases.

Add-ons To Your Drink

Now, above are the base offerings—there are a whole bunch of things you can add to your drink. Here’s a for instance with my favorite bubble tea drink, the Taro Milk Tea—the possible add-ons include:

  • Boba (bobacat, crystal, honey popping)
  • Jelly (rainbow, lychee, mango, brown sugar, coffee, coconut, strawberry, grass)
  • Aloe vera
  • Whipped cream cheese
  • Egg pudding

Each addition of boba, jelly, etc. is one dollar. And if you, say, order Bobacat Boba and you still want extra boba, that’s another buck. That said, if you order a drink that comes with Bobacat Boba, you can replace it with another topping for just a quarter.

I do like how you can adjust the sweetness with your order—regular sweet is the base amount of sweetness (100%) but you can also do extra sweet at 125%, less sweet at 50%, or no sweetness at all. You can also adjust your ice—regular is the base, but you can request extra ice, less ice, no ice, and as I mentioned above, you can have your drink hot for an additional buck.

The Croffle and a Menu Link

They offer one food option: a croffle. That’s a croissant-waffle hybrid, where croissant dough is cooked in a waffle iron.

Head over to their website to further peruse the menu. I don’t believe there is much in the way of milk tea/boba in the immediate vicinity, but over in the Lloyd District about 7 blocks away there’s iThai Boba, which also serves Thai noodle, rice, and curry dishes. Will we see dueling bobas?

I also like that they have photos of cats displayed on a wall in the SW Broadway location. How cute is that? (Says the cat-loving food writer.)

As for their opening plans, I have reached out to Bobacat Teahouse and will pass on any additional details when I get them.
