On Sunday night, I learned about a handmade ice cream sandwich pop-up in Sellwood identified as “Screaming Sammies.” This is an old school kind of venture, with no apparent online presence, only a physical presence in Sellwood, and a reputation that is spread by word of mouth IRL and in online forums.
From what I’ve learned, these handmade ice cream sandwiches are available at a little covered stand with a red-and-white awning, across the street from PDX Sliders (1605 SE Bybee Blvd #5714) in Sellwood (in front of the building that houses Agni Yoga and Windermere Realty Trust). They are only there on Saturdays during the summer. More about them:
- Screaming Sammies offers a variety of flavors (this image indicates perhaps a total of five).
- Flavor names are a kind of onomatopoeia: S’crunch, Squeeze, and Scrooch.
- Sandwiches are $6/each.
- They are smaller in diameter than a Ruby Jewell ice cream sandwich, but thicker.
- Neighbors say the ice cream sandwiches are excellent: “They are so yummy!” “Those are REALLY GOOD!” “Highly recommended!” “Absolutely delicious!”
- Apparently he was popping up his ice cream sandwiches last summer, too, and got rave reviews then.
I would reach out to them to learn more, but there is literally no way to do that by email/social/phone at this point. If you have additional details about Screaming Sammies and their work in Sellwood, please feel free to send them my way. And next Saturday, if you’re in Sellwood, stop by and check them out!
