While I was away this past weekend (traveling home from being out of the country where I enjoyed the glory of homemade butter tarts and Old Dutch Ketchup chips), I received more than one email from readers about the closing of the 1927 S’mores Company. The general feeling among the Portland public on this seems to range from astonished to curious to freaking out. Here’s what we know.

About 1927 S’mores Company

1927 S’mores Company started out as a food cart pop-up at the Moda Center; they also provided catering, including gluten-free options. According to Eater, their new location at the time (1126 SW Alder Street) was a partnership with Chefstable. They offered various flavors of s’mores (e.g., bacon-maple s’mores and rosé marshmallows), along with hot chocolate and parfaits (deconstructed s’mores that were considered easier to eat).

The space had a “rustic and woodsy, but refined vibe.” Read more about their early days at this location on Eater.

The company is owned by James and Elise Kelly.

The Abrupt Closing

It appears that 1927 S’mores Company’s last day open was Sunday, September 15. This was what the homepage looked like as I was writing this article, but it has now switched back to its original homepage:

Here is another link for the homepage.

One of the emails I received said, “I was heartbroken, shocked, dismayed, and flabbergasted to discover that 1927 S’mores company is closing imminently. The employees said they were told yesterday and given no explanation.”

The company’s COO, Rodrigo Patterson, posted on LinkedIn: “It’s with a heavy heart that I share some unexpected news: my time at 1927 S’mores has come to an end due to sudden layoffs. After pouring my heart and soul into this brand and the amazing work we did, myself and the team created true magic and to see it come to a halt so abruptly is hard to believe. If you’re in PDX, and in need of staff, I’ve got a top notch crew looking for their next role!”

Over on Reddit, some folks are concerned that they are SOL when it comes to the reservation they made for the company to provide sweets/dessert for their wedding. People on Facebook have indicated that they are not responding to emails; hopefully that is only temporary.

What’s Next?

On Yelp, where it normally says, “Yelpers have reported that this business has closed” or something like that, it says on the page for 1927 S’mores Company, “1927 S’mores Company is temporarily closed. Scheduled to reopen on January 1, 2025.” That is a very interesting detail. I have looked at their ORSOS docs and nothing looks out of the ordinary; annual reports and registration seem intact.

I’ve reached out to the 1927 S’mores Company to get their side of the story and will update this article when I receive it.

My sympathies go out to anyone who hired them to cater their wedding and now have to scramble; wishing you all the best of luck in that process. And to the company’s employees, I also send my best to you as you look for a new job.
