The headline says it all: Screaming Sammies is back! This pop-up ice cream sandwich stall returned in mid-April to the Sellwood-Moreland neighborhood, offering six different flavors.
Last year we were happy to report on this local delicacy of small-batch ice cream sandwiches, which made quite a splash in the Sellwood-Moreland neighborhood. I reached out to Gary, the man behind Screaming Sammies, after I wandered onto his Instagram page the other day. He told me he first popped up this year on April 13. This is his third season and he is as enthusiastic as ever to be the purveyor of delicious frozen treats.
Who Is That Guy Behind Screaming Sammies?
I asked Gary to tell me a little bit about how he got involved selling ice cream sandwiches on a street corner in Portland.
His time in food started in college where he was a bread baker. He later had a career in product development in publishing, as well as time doing marketing and sales. He retired from all that, and with his wife they started on an online cookie company. Dingel’s Oven was distributed nationwide during its lifespan, which was cut short by cost issues.
He decided to adapt his cookies to join with ice cream to make these ice cream sandwiches, which are very popular with Sellwood locals.

Screaming Sammies Flavors
Here is what he is offering this year:
- S’crunch!: Vanilla ice cream with graham crackers mixed into it, sandwiched between two chocolate chip fudge brownie cookies.
- Squash!: Chocolate ice cream sandwiched between two graham cracker/peanut butter cookies.
- Squeeze!: Vanilla ice cream with lemon zest sandwiched between two ginger molasses cookies.
- Smash!: Vanilla ice cream with sea salt caramel and brownies, sandwiched between two fudge brownie cookies.
- Squish!: Vanilla ice cream sandwiched between semi-sweet chocolate chip cookies.
- Caffe Spumati: Toasted pecan infused coffee ice cream sandwiched between two ginger molasses cookies.
Here’s his branded menu with more creative descriptions.

When and Where to Find Screaming Sammies
Gary will be near SE 13th Avenue and Miller in front of the Sellwood Cycle Repair shop every Sunday from now to mid-October. His hours are noon to 6pm, or until sold out.
His tag line is “Handmade Happiness,” and that is very apropos. Gary is such an upbeat guy and gets a lot of joy out of spreading happiness through his ice cream sandwiches. I stopped by over the weekend to get one of his ice cream sandwiches and to met this local celeb, and it was great to connect in person. The ice cream sandwich was also delicious.

He told me he got a lot of requests for this classic—vanilla ice cream between two chocolate chip cookies, so he brought it into the fold.
Wishing Gary great success this season with Screaming Sammies in Sellwood-Moreland!
