While I was walking over to Mikiko Mochi Donut shop after a nice meal at Pambiche the other day, I noticed that the adjacent storefront had a new sign up: Yunomi Matcha Portland. I reached out to the owner to learn more about the new matcha bar, and he provided me with a micro update.
The owner, Arnold Yang, responded. First, he told me the good news that they just passed their health inspection. Awesome and congrats!
Since our email exchange, I have learned that “yunomi” means “hot water cup,” and is ceramic, cylindrical, with no handle.

He also told me that he looks forward to doing a small opening in mid-May. At the matcha bar, they will be serving organic ceremonial matcha from Japan in their “very small, unique, and well-balanced matcha lattes.”
On their Instagram, their work is described as “Matcha Bar, Craft Matcha Lattes, Small Desserts.”
Small desserts sound very cute and dare I hope that there will be wagashi? By the way, did you know that Portland is home to one of the finest wagashi artists in the country? I look forward to seeing what they decide to offer at Yunomi Matcha Portland.
The Deep and Beautiful Efforts of the Individual
Arnold told me that Yumomi Matcha Portland is “really just a one man show right now.” He is working hard to get the matcha bar up and running and has devoted his time to focus on quality rather than updating his social media, which I completely understand.
Yunomi Matcha Portland comes on the heels of the arrival of another matcha bar, Project Matcha, which opened May 10. It has had a crazy amount of coverage online, including scenes of lines around the block. At Yunomi, they invite you to “small soft opening” on Saturday, May 17 from 11am to 3pm. Note: They will only be doing iced matcha drinks that day.
Matcha is big in Portland these days. Wishing Arnold the best as he prepares to open his world of matcha this weekend.
