We’ve got a Trung Nguyên Legend Cafe update!

For whatever reason, I had the urge to go check out the status of the Trung Nguyên Legend Cafe that’s going to open on SE Powell Blvd just east of 82nd Avenue. So I stopped by Sunday afternoon, and it turned out to be a timely visit—I was able to see the interior, see the uncovered signage, and speak to the owner of the franchise, Dume Tran.

The Building

Here’s what the building’s side exterior looked like this past February.

Here’s what it looks like now.

It’s looks more or less the same on the outside—aside from the signage—since we broke the news here about a year ago of the arrival of the Cafe to Portland. But it’s very much under construction inside and because it’s essentially a big open box, there is a lot of room for creativity in the floor plan and interior design (Harmony Decor is at the helm of that aspect of the buildout)

Trung Nguyên Legend Cafe Update: Additional Details

I was in a curious mood, so I walked up to the front of the building and peered in the windows. I saw that there was a lot of work being done inside. The guy who was working inside saw me, and motioned for me to come around the back, since the front door was locked. So I did, and as I entered I passed by another man working on a ladder and said hello.

Turns out, that was the owner, Dume Tran!

I mentioned to him how I had been following the progress of this space for the past year. When he asked who I was, I told him and saw a look of acknowledgement cross his face. He walked me out the back door (where there was less sound from the power tools being used inside), and I asked him when they plan to open.

“We are hoping middle of next month,” he said. I told him how happy I was to see this place get closer to opening and how big of a deal it seems. He agreed and said, “You’ve never had coffee like this before!”

Trung Nguyên Legend Expansion in the U.S. and the World

As of the writing of this article, there are six franchise outlets of Trung Nguyên Legend Group in the U.S., and that includes the Trung Nguyên E-Coffee shop that opened on June 7 in Carrollton, Texas—an area of the country they most definitely have their eye on, due to the proximity to the Dallas/Fort Worth. There in Carrollton, customers enjoyed their classic Vietnamese phin-filter coffee, iced milk coffee, egg coffee, coconut milk coffee, and banana coffee. I imagine we will see similar offerings at the Portland cafe.

And America is going to see a lot more of the Trung Nguyên brand to come, as this coffee company plans to open 100 cafes in the U.S.—which includes this one in Portland. In 2025, additional shops in Texas, Philadelphia, and Oregon (my guess is Beaverton after Portland) are planned.

They are also expanding to Australia, Canada, Japan, South Korea, Dubai, France, Southeast Asia, Asia, and Europe. The coffee company’s presence worldwide is under three brands: Trung Nguyên Legend, Trung Nguyên E-Coffee, and the World of Coffee.

I’ll stay in touch with Dume on the opening of the Portland Trung Nguyên Legend Cafe, and hope to report back next month on it.
