Kooks Sports Bar Will Open in North Portland

A new sports bar called Kooks will open in the space that was most recently home to the Portland Pickles Public House on North Mississippi Avenue. Another venture from Stephen Chao and his wife Vy, as well as Chris Mateja, they look to open their doors in early February for your convivial sports watching needs. I do love me a good sports bar (mostly to watch baseball, but it’s great to catch tennis, too), so I’m definitely curious about this place.

I was happy to see the 2025 James Beard Awards semifinalists list released today. And not only did Portland represent well, but chefs from other cities in Oregon were recognized, too. Alma PDX, a New Balkan and Turkish Restaurant, Is Coming to NE Portland

I recently became aware of a new restaurant called Alma PDX (not to be confused with Alma Chocolates), which will move into the old Masala Lab space when it vacates at the end of January. It looks to be a Balkan and Turkish restaurant, a cuisine that is less common in Portland than a lot of other places.

I’ve updated this article since it was initially published, but I’m still here to share with you the fruits of my additional research on Alma.
