Four Things I Learned This Week (October 29)

It’s been one of those weeks—happily flooded with interesting client editing work (this time about forests), so the posting here was a bit light. Still, there was much to observe in Portland food news.

Bing Mi to open a dumpling and noodle bar. Have you been to Bing Mi? Their Jian Bing are seriously good. And they will be expanding their offerings with dumplings and noodles, as per their Instagram: “Bing Mi is gonna have a dumpling and noodle bar in NW near our food cart!” Looks like it will be in the old Industrial Cafe and Saloon space. Gartner’s Meats has turkeys for pre-order. No doubt there will be a number of places where you can order your turkey, but Gartner’s wins the first “turkey pre-order” announcement I’ve come across this year. Word on the street is that they are awesome and it’s a good idea to order early. They have both fresh and smoked turkeys available—call 503-252-7801 to order. 7450 NE Killingsworth Street, Portland

The Haunted Tales of Wyrd. Spooky things have gone on at Wyrd Leatherworks and Meadery in SE Portland. Read up on them here, and why not head on over for some mead made from locally-sourced honey. They have snacks, too. 4515 SE 41st Avenue, Portland

Full-service brunch is returning to Coquine. Named to the recent NY Times restaurant list, Coquine continues with its awesomeness by bringing back brunch, starting Friday, November 5. It will be a full-service indoor brunch but you’ll have to show proof of vaccination before interesting. Their latest newsletter also mentions “goose dinners coming soon,” so that’s intriguing. 6839 SE Belmont Street, Portland

Congrats EEM, Coquine on the NY Times 2021 Restaurant List

It’s all over social media today—the NY Times’ 2021 Restaurant List—and I’m thrilled for EEM and Coquine for being chosen for the list, the focus of which is “the 50 places in America we’re most excited about right now.” I love both of these places—the food is delicious and memorable, the space is comfortable, and the hospitality is excellent. Small Bites – No Saint Pizza, Baon Kainan’s Arrival, Bee’s Cakes at Steeplejack, and More

It’s been a while! I’ve been working hard to improve some health issues, which have really been a buzzkill for this blog. But my curiosity about Portland food got the better of me, and I took a review of my regular sources for things that interest me. Here’s what I found.

Filipino (food) popup at the Side Yard Farm Friday. An enticing-sounding popup at the Side Yard Farm in Cully featuring Filipino businesses is happening this Friday, August 6. Among others, vegan bakery Kumare will be participating and offering “our mini ube ensaymada as well as NEW all plant-based Filipino goodies such as Biko (coconut rice cake), Turon (fried banana rolls), and Cantaloupe Juice.” No pre-order necessary. 5-9pm. 4800 NE Simpson Street, Portland

They cross my desk via press releases or social media or the news—and in random conversations. It’s easy to just let it go, passing into the realm of ephemera, but I’d like to change that. Favorite Eats of 2017 in Portland

Today is Bridgetown Bites’s six month anniversary! Or is it birthday? Anyway, we thought we’d take this opportunity to roundup our favorite eats of 2017. It’s always fun to look back on the year, and though I tasted my share of straight up duds, there was a lot more that was delicious. Here are some of our favorites from 2017.

Coquine chocolate chip cookie

Chocolate Chip Cookie | Coquine. This cookie is famous, and there’s a good reason for that, as it is more than just an excellent chocolate chip cookie—it features some additional flavors that elevate the whole thing. Those additional elements would be smoked almonds, salted caramel, and chunks (not chips) of high quality chocolate.
