Grinds & Vines, a Black-Owned Coffee + Wine Bar, is Coming to East Portland

Back in October 2021 I caught wind of Grinds & Vines, a Black-owned coffee and wine bar, opening up in the Hazelwood/Parkrose Heights area in east Portland. The good folks from Rocky Butte Coffee Roasters were helping them out with a coffee tasting, and it sounded like a lot of fun. It’s going to be run by Donna and Leroy Barber (of Black Santa fame) at 10632 NE Halsey Street.

Along with farmers markets, CSAs are a great way to access local, sustainably-grown food, and they’re not just for summer—many farms offer winter shares, too. This means you’ll get all sorts of delicious foods of the season—think brassicas (broccoli and Brussels sprouts),  alliums (onions, garlic, leeks), and hardy greens like radicchio.

Four Things I Learned This Week (March 6)

Client needs trumped my little blog for a few weeks and paying attention to food news took a back seat. Not this week! Here are four things I learned this week.

It’s Portland Dining Month. An annual month-long event in March in Portland lots of outlets have written about it (try here, here, here, and here for lots of info). Organized by Travel Portland, you can check out over 100 restaurants all over Portland and enjoy prix fixe three-course meals for just $33.

Check out this Taco Crawl map. Reddit user u/savethisplant posted a map to a taco crawl they did in Portland with friends and it’s a decent selection of spots. Personally, I’d add Taco Pedaler, La Osita, and El Gallo to the list; no doubt there are others worth an inclusion.

East Portland (and Gresham) eats. My pal Krista Garcia put together a helpful map of eats east of 205 for Eater Portland. As someone who lives east of 82nd, I love having resources on this side of town and further east. The aforementioned La Osita made the list, thanks in part to their fab breakfast tacos. Check it out.

More Pizza Coming Soon to FoPo. Looks like the Foster-Powell area is getting more pizza—Humdinger Pizza at 9201 SE Foster Road. They submitted a liquor license recently (a Brewery Public House/Full-On Premises license) and my interest is definitely piqued. Looks like developer Chad Rennaker is involved, who has been active in that part of Portland. I look forward to see how it compares to the other pizzerias along and near Foster that have opened relatively recently (Char, Atlas, Otto).

Head To Bake America Great Again This Thursday

This Thursday hails the arrival of the holiday fundraiser, Bake America Great Again. It’s in its fifth year, and I can attest to it being a great event—all ages welcome and seriously family-friendly; I attended last in 2017 and brought home a bunch of delicious things. It was at Pip’s then, but this year it’s at Level Beer, located at 5211 NE 148th Avenue in Northeast Portland. Preemptive Love Coalition and RIHO will be the recipients of the donations. Around the World in 82 Dishes Starts October 11

As someone who loves to eat food from the world of global cuisine, you can bet I’m pretty chuffed about the upcoming campaign, Around the World in 82 Dishes. It’s billed as “an international food tour of 82nd Avenue,” and judging from the list of participants, that’s right on target. The campaign goes from Friday, October 11 to Sunday October 27, a little over two weeks. $5 specials are the name of the game. Continue reading “Around the World in 82 Dishes Starts October 11”
