For a while now, I’ve wanted to find a way to share updates on past stories we’ve published on Bridgetown Bites in some kind of regular, orderly way. Social media seems clunky for this, as it moves so fast, hence this new—and experimental—updates column. This month it’s called July 2026 Story Updates. Perhaps a little boring, but it’s straight and to the point.

Small Bites: República Returns, Dat Banh Mi, Better Half, and More

República returns. It’s true! They’ve decided to open back up for daytime service, Thursday through Sunday, 11am to 2:30pm. Founder Angel Medina posted the news on his Substack:

Quesadillas. Tacotes. Guisados. Pozole. Maybe a surprise or two along the way.

No timeline. No promises. As long as you keep showing up, we’ll keep doing it right.

Nana’s Exquisite Confections Opens Today in Portland

I recently learned from a Bridgetown Bites tipster that Nana’s Exquisite Confections opens today on NE 82nd Avenue in the Roseway neighborhood. Operated by local baker Florence Jenkins, she has operated Nana’s at markets and through mail-order for a number of years. Now, she starts this part of her journey in a brick and mortar space.

I spoke with Florence earlier this week about this next step in her business, and here is what I learned.
