Four Things I Learned This Week (May 31)

Water Avenue Coffee is served at The People’s Courts. I was very happy to learn this news and it makes me want to check out The People’s Courts even more. They posted a video of their cafe space, and it looks nice. Also, know that you can go to The People’s Courts and just enjoy their food and drink without playing sports there. In their FAQ they say, “You are welcome to come eat, drink, watch a game, hang out, etc. without paying any fees.” I wonder if they will show the 2024 Paris Olympics there? 2700 NE 82nd Avenue, Portland

A Fling, a Party, and a Market. There are a bunch of things going on this Saturday, June 1, including the Spring Fling Block Party in Montavilla from noon to 5pm (live music, art, vendors, food at the Rocket Empire Machine food hall, Gigantic Brewing’s tap room); the Parking Lot Party at the pizza cart Reeva starting at 4pm (food, drink, music, vendors); and Rocky Butte Farmers Market‘s first market day of the 2024 season (9am to 1pm) at their new location next to Glenhaven Park. 6935 NE Glisan Street, 7727 NE Sandy Blvd, NE 82nd Avenue and Siskiyou, Portland

Demarco’s Sandwiches is closing. Big bummer for those who love east coast-style sandos: Demarco’s is closing their Division Street location; Saturday, June 30 is the last day you can access their food at that cart at that location. However, they will still do events and catering. So there’s that. And in their words: “COME DOWN AND SAY HELLO SO WE HOPE YOU COME DOWN AND CRUSH US FOR THE NEXT MONTH.” 4606 SE Division Street, Portland

40 LBS Coffee is moving to SW 6th and Washington this summer. It looks like this new location is the Aspect on Sixth building, where FORTE has been (their website says they closed April 30, so just a little over a month ago). According to the 40 LBS Instagram, “Currently we are doing pop-up Tuesday through Thursday from 8-noon, if you are in the area come say hi.” They also talk about construction that will be starting up in a couple of weeks. Top 5 Posts on Bridgetown Bites, April 2024

“Meg, you’re really pushing it!” I say to myself about the delayed posting—almost to June—of the blog’s monthly top 5 posts roundup. Truth be told, traffic was affected a lot after the March 2024 adjustment in Google’s “Helpful Content Update,” and … well … it’s been a real bummer. So, it means devoting some time to re-strategize. Still, over 9,300 unique visitors made it here and generated just under 12,000 page views for the month.

I appreciate your reading, sharing, and enjoying the content here on Bridgetown Bites—many, many thanks. You can also follow us on Instagram and Facebook, as well as X/twitter, and aforementioned re-strategizing will affect the social channels, too. 5. Get Ready for Fallow’s Restaurant, From the People Behind Bastion

The folks behind Bastion, a restaurant in Sellwood that shows you that food can be both healthy and delicious, are opening up a new restaurant, Fallow’s, just up the street in the old Relish Gastropub space. They will offer dinner service (Bastion closes at 4pm the days they are open). As a fan of Bastion, I’m pretty excited about this.

Update: They have launched a Kickstarter and it has a whole bunch of new information in it about the restaurant.

Zaiqa To Open in Old Bambuza Space in Portland

Zaiqa,  a restaurant specializing in Indian and Pakistani cuisine, is set to open in the South Waterfront area, according to filed paperwork with the City of Portland. They will take over the space that Vietnamese restaurant Bambuza held for 16 years.

Four Things I Learned This Week (May 17)

OG Phat is over. Back in March a Bridgetown Bites tipster directed me to this post on Guerrilla Development’s Instagram page about a project called “OG Phat” on NE Sandy Blvd and 68th. I reached out to Kevin at Guerrilla, who was happy to chat about it on the phone this week to clarify what’s up with the project. The bottom line: OG Phat is no longer in process. It was an adaptive reuse project by Mekha, the Vietnamese grocer Nam Phuong Market, and the old Yen Ha space, which was going to be a taproom.

Kevin bought the property during the pandemic and is probably going to sell it. He wishes it was a different reality, but it is what it is. I’m bummed because of the potential it held but am glad to know what’s up. For now, case closed. 6834-6838 NE Sandy Blvd, Portland

Pronto Gelato opens Memorial Day weekend. This is great news and I can’t want to check it out. The details: “We are opening our doors Saturday May 25 and will be open through Sunday 5/26 and Monday 5/27 from 3-9 PM each night! Come on over and stop by for some gelato, espresso, and fun! See you SOON” 4205 NE Alberta Street, Portland

Cornet Custard to open in their own space. Cornet Custard, which currently operates out of the Colibri Florist, will be moving to their own location. A tipster sent me a note about it, after having heard these details from Mika Paredes, one the owners of Cornet. A little research led me to the old Woodsman Tavern as a very possible location of this new location, as Naomi Pomeroy (the other Cornet owner) is mentioned in ORSOS docs for that corner of SE Division and 46th Avenue. I reached out to them earlier this week and hope to confirm this location sooner than later. Update 5/21/24: Turns out the new Cornet Custard location is going to be in the old Woodsman Market space next door (same address). Looks like they chose to speak with The Oregonian first (paywall) on the details. Additional tidbit: Pomeroy is opening a bistro in the old Woodsman Tavern. 4537 SE Division Street, Portland

New food cart pod coming to SE Hawthorne Blvd. The Hawthorne Street Food & Bar is coming to SE Hawthorne where 42nd Avenue meets it from the south. The buildings on it have been bulldozed and new electrical, plumbing, and gas permits have been filed. Along with 14 carts and seating, there will be a full bar. Projected opening: Summer 2024. 4225 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland

NA/AF-Focused Ever AFter Will Open in Portland

This is the logo for Ever AFter, created by artist Lisa Congdon. Ever AFter is a an AF/NA (alcohol-free/non-alcoholic) bottle shop, tasting bar, and community space, and will open in Portland.

If you’ve read this blog for a while, you know I’m a big fan of NA (non-alcoholic) drinking, in part because I do not drink alcohol myself (though I used to). Portland has become a place where accessing NA drinks at bars and restaurants—cocktails and beer, especially—is a relatively easy thing to do. Portland is also a place where people like to connect through identity (“I’m a non-drinker”) and community—and the community associated with NA has grown into a pretty sizable and healthy one. Ever AFter aims to support that community and provide access to products beloved by those who like to drink but eschew alcohol, in a welcoming and accessible space.
