Four Things I Learned This Week (September 15)

JaCiva’s Bakery is closing. This story blew up across my social media this week, as people are totally bummed about the news of JaCiva’s Bakery closing. The bakery’s message: “It is with a heavy heart that we are announcing JaCiva’s Bakery will be closing its doors. What a pleasure it’s been serving our Portland community for 37 years and we will miss being a part of your celebrations.” They are “are continuing business as supplies last.” Stop in before they close for good. 4733 SE Hawthorne Blvd, Portland

Zuckercreme is having a birthday party and it’s corn-themed. Montavilla’s creative cafe and shop, Zuckercreme, is celebrating their second birthday on Sunday, October 1. There will be elotes, corn on hot dogs, popcorn, corn ice cream, corn pastries, corn decor, and more. Tomato Fest is tomorrow. For the third year, Wellspent Market is holding a tomato festival in their parking lot. The fabulous BLT will be back, along with info on dry-farmed tomatoes, some cooking demonstrations, tomato swag, and more. Behind the Corporation Buying Up Portland’s Most Famous ‘Independent’ Restaurants. That’s the name of this article on PDX Eater, which is pretty interesting, on the independent restaurant scene here in Portland; Sortis Holdings, who “has acquired a wide swath of Portland-based businesses”; and the challenges faced by the hospitality business. The part about “chain-ifying” is one I am very familiar with, as this has been a concern in NYC for a number of years. Anyway, the Eater article is worth a read—check it out.

Four Things I Learned This Week (June 2)

Update on The Heist. Back in February I told you about The Heist, a new food cart pod opening in the old US Bank location in Woodstock. It looks like they moved in the first set of carts this week and are aiming for a Saturday, June 10 opening. I hope they can make it, though sometimes things happen beyond one’s control. Expanded hours and more coming to Nico’s Cantina. This week Nico wrote about a bunch of changes coming to the Cantina, which all sound good but he is understandably feeling a mix of excitement and trepidation. Things to look forward to: open 7 days a week; “Mezcal Monday’s,” where every bottle of Mezcal behind the bar will be 50% off; and “Taco Tuesday,” where every taco will be $1 off. Zuckercreme’s Strawberry Museum returns. In Montavilla, the adorable Zuckercreme is bringing back their Strawberry Museum again this year, starting tomorrow, June 3. It will last all summer. In fact, they anticipate having so much “strawberry content” (something I can get behind) that they started up the Museum’s own Instagram at @pdxstrawberrymuseum. Along with all the yums, Zuckercreme’s Brittany Sigal is looking to expand into fashion—strawberry fashion, that is, in a show on Sunday, June 25. Chaat Wallah has new hours. Looks like Chaat Wallah has settled on some new hours for their cart in the Upright/Junior’s parking lot in Cully/Roseway: Monday to Friday 3pm to 9pm and Saturday and Sunday noon to 9pm. 7 days a week! Over on Facebook, Deepak Saxena said about the turnout, “we’ve been blown away by the support and it’s been way beyond what we expected.” All good news. 7157 NE Prescott Street, Portland

Top 10 Posts on Bridgetown Bites for 2022

It’s 2023! And though we are in a new year, I’m looking back at the top 10 posts of 2022. I realize that the last time I did this was … 2017.

It was, as usual, interesting to see what got the most traffic in 2022—meaning, what readers were particularly drawn to. It’s no surprise that restaurant news was the main driver, and summer seems to be a bit of a theme.

Over 55,000 visits were recorded, and almost 35,000 of those visits were new to the site. Not bad for this modest operation.

Last year I remember coming across something called the “Portland Strawberry Museum” and wondering, “what the heck was that?” I mean, what a great name! Is there some kind of museum dedicated to strawberries in Portland? Turns out it was a month of Saturdays in June of celebrating the strawberry, from Brittany Sigal’s Zuckercreme (then a popup). It is back this year for the entire month of June at her space in Montavilla.
