Big Ass Bake Sale in September Will Support RAICES

An excellent event is just over the horizon—the Big Ass Bake Sale at Cookshop. Over 40 of Portland’s best bakers, pastry chefs and restaurant owners are banding together to produce this sale, with all proceeds going to RAICES, “a nonprofit agency that promotes justice by providing free and low-cost legal services to underserved immigrant children, families, and refugees.” It will take place on Saturday, September 7 from 10am to 2pm, or until they run out of sweets.

Along with the sweets—both whole and individual desserts—there will be coffee from Albina Press, and wines donated by Sardine Head and Oui Wine Bar. There will also be tons of raffle prizes, like a gift certificate from Pip’s and a whole keg of 10 Barrel Beer.

I spoke to one of the organizers, Kir Jensen, about the event. Difficult and heartbreaking current events were her inspiration for the bake sale. “Things are so crazy right now and I can’t even imagine what these families are going through at the border and beyond,” she remarked. “No human deserves this kind of treatment, especially coming from a nation that was built by immigrants.”

She added, “I just wanted to do something positive and I’m grateful to have such a strong and supportive community of artisans. So many talented people are taking time to participate and make this the most BADASS bake sale. I’m looking at you, Portland. Bring your friends, appetite, heart full of love and a mighty fist full of cash!”
