A plate of Kenyan food I ate at 2018’s Fremont Fest.
Very happy to see that the Fremont Fest is back again this year—it’s a really fun way to celebrate this commercial/mixed strip in NE Portland neighborhoods of Beaumont-Wilshire and Cully. Head over there this Saturday, August 21 from 10am to 4pm. The Fest takes place on NE Fremont Street from 42nd to 51st Avenues.
Of particular interest to this blog is what’s going on at the Hi-Top Tavern, located at 5015 NE Fremont Street, right at the eastern end of the Fest. From noon to 4pm there will be a beer garden; also look for the Whiskey Wagon, a mobile bar. Folks will also be grilling up (over charcoal) Zenner’s Bratwurst or Vegan Field Roast Bratwurst—you can get them with peppers & onions, sauerkraut, and Inglehoffer grain mustard on a Pioneer Roll with a side of Tim’s Cascade Potato Chips. Yum.
ETA: Bishop & Son’s will be at the Fest! You can find them around NE 50th Street. Definitely get one of their pumpkin loaves. I wonder if they’ll have ice cream, too.
Good chance there will be additional food vendors present, too. But don’t forget the brick & mortar food scene on NE Fremont, which is pretty great. Food highlights for me are (west to east):
- Red Sauce Pizza.
- Prince Coffee.
- Grand Central Baking.
- Amalfi’s.
- Pip’s.
- Nepali Kitchen.
- Jim & Patty’s.
There are a bunch of places I want to try, too (Momiji, Nacheaux, Dirty Lettuce, Happy Day, Stanich’s). Shout out to non-edible spots Puddletown Games, Foot Traffic, and Beaumont Hardware. Very sorry to see Gazelle end their time there, but congrats to the owners on their impending retirement!
See you Saturday. Here’s to a great Fest!
