Trinidadian Food Pops Up in Beaumont-Wilshire

Mango chow I helped make in 2016. It is delicious.

I’m a little late to the game, but I had to blog about this Trinidadian food popup at Little Griddle tomorrow, Tuesday October 19 at 3pm. Instagram account Mad Man Pop Up is behind this and the menu for tomorrow looks delicious (and is compatible with today’s earlier post about pumpkin).

  • Doubles, $5 (pumpkin add-on $3). Comes with mango chow, cucumber chow, culantro oil, tamarind sauce, with option of pepper sauce.
  • Saltfish & Bake, $10. Comes with salted cod, tomato, culantro oil
  • Aloo Pie, $7 (pumpkin add-on $3). Comes with mango chow, cucumber chow, culantro oil, tamarind sauce, with the option of pepper sauce)

I haven’t eaten doubles since I lived in Queens and I get a serious hankering for them from time to time. I have not encountered them in Portland until now. Doubles are fried flat bread stuffed with curried chickpeas. Above it mentions that it comes with mango chow and cucumber chow—the mango and cucumber are cooling foods that are mixed with chiles, aromatics, lime juice, and possibly a few other things. Culantro is reminiscent of cilantro, but is stronger flavored; I also know it as shado beni. It is a key flavor in this cuisine.

Saltfish & Bake is likely going to be a kind of fried flat bread (bake) paired with the salt cod, tomato, and culantro; maybe onions, too. And Aloo Pie makes me think of a veggie samosa in a the shape of an empanada. All three of these items are classic Trini food.

I missed the first iteration of this popup today but will be doing my best to stop by tomorrow for this Trini food. It brings back many memories of a class I took with League of Kitchens back in 2016 when I spent a day with our instructor, Dolly, who helped me and the rest of the class make some wonderful Trini food. It was a great day that gave me great memories and a happy, full belly. Honestly, I’d love to see League of Kitchens expand to Portland.
