Two Ways to Fill Your Pantry

Last time we talked about the Fill Your Pantry project, the focus was tomatoes, tomatoes, tomatoes. Well, this community bulk-buying opportunity is back in two formats: a pop-up event in November and by pre-order for a December distribution. Fill Your Pantry is a great way to stock up on seasonal ingredients while supporting the local food system.

Pop-Up

The 2021 Fall Harvest Pop-Up will take place on Saturday, November 20 and Sunday, November 21 at the Hollywood, Hillsdale, and Montavilla farmers markets. Just show up and make your purchases while the respective markets are open, no pre-pay or pre-ordering necessary. This is a way for you to buy in bulk, preserve the fall bounty, to extend your enjoyment of autumn’s seasonal foods.

Another aspect of this event is to support Black, Brown, and Indigenous farmers; LGBTQIA2S+ farmers; and other new and emerging farmers looking to gain success in the Fill Your Pantry market events. Participating farms are Another Spring Farm, Moorish Roots (Black-owned), and Tutuilla True Fish (Native-owned).

Pre-Order

The Fill Your Pantry 2021 pre-order event is live as of today and ordering continues until Sunday, November 28. You can stock up on all sorts of foods: dry beans, root vegetables, winter squash, onions and garlic, as well as flours, nuts, honey, pasture-raised meats, fish, and more.

Pickup is between December 4 and 12 at the Hollywood, Hillsdale, and Montavilla farmers markets, as well as down in Oregon City. Here are more specific times for the Portland markets:

  • Hollywood Farmers Market – Saturday, December 4, 9am to 1pm
  • Hillsdale Farmers Market – Sunday, December 5, 9am to 1pm
  • Montavilla Farmers Market – Sunday, December 12, 10am to 2pm

Instructions on how to participate in this Fill Your Pantry event can be found on the Friends of Family Farmers website.

I hope you can take advantage of this excellent opportunity to purchase high quality, local food and support local food systems at the same time. Everyone wins!

These events are offered to the community by a coalition of local organizations: Friends of Family Farmers, Slow Food Portland, Come Thru Market, Oregon Farmers Market Association, OSU Small Farms, Culinary Breeding Network, Cook First and numerous Portland-area farmers markets.
