This morning I reached out to Alex Ganum at Upright Brewing to get an update on what’s happening over at the Cully site (NE Prescott and 72nd Avenue). I and a number of neighbors have been curious about the progress at this location, and I really appreciate Alex for taking the time to share some details as to where they are in the process.
It’s pretty common knowledge that Portland’s permit process has been slower than molasses. Recently, Commissioner Mingus Mapps has had his eye on this and even held a town hall last month to address this issue. The reason I bring this up is that permitting has been an issue for this Cully site, but the good news from Alex is that they “seem to be over that hump and hope to really get going on the buildout in the next couple weeks.”
He adds, “The plan is to keep the footprint of the building, which is a small 1000 sq/ft, and have a taproom for Upright and a small cafe for Junior’s inside, with two carts and some outdoor seating on the lot.” It’s also important that when “pod” is mentioned for food carts at this location that means just a couple of carts (presumably Chaat Wallah and one other), so it’s not a big production. Alex wants to keep things modest in an appropriate and manageable fit for the location.
As to the interior, Alex said this: “Even though the space is quite small, the building is a mess and requires extensive work, so there’s plenty to do.” That’s going to take some time. If he had to predict when they’ll open, it would be early summer. At least, he hopes for that (if not earlier).
We are hopeful for that, too. It is a great location for something like this and will really add to the neighborhood. I can see myself walking over to Upright Brewing, spending time there with friends, and having a relaxing time in the neighborhood.
Thanks again, Alex, for the update!

Any update? Haven’t seen any work done in quite a while.
I think they are still hung up in the permitting hamster wheel. That’s the last I heard back in late April: https://bridgetownbites.com/2022/04/29/four-things-i-learned-this-week-april-29-portland-oregon/
