This morning, I read a tip from a reader about something happening in the old Columbia River Brewing space in the Hollywood District (also briefly home to Spud Monkeys but I don’t think they even got off the ground before the pandemic hit). He does a lot of walking in the area and this seemed new to him. I headed over there to see what he was talking about and found this—signs for Pono Brewing Company on the property.

There were two small horizontal signs taped up and a banner in the dining room area adjacent to the brewing equipment in there.
This space has been empty for around two years now and whenever I walk by it just seems sad. When I lived in the area, I enjoyed having a bite to eat, a beer (they also had good Arnold Palmers), and sometimes catch a game at Columbia River Brewing. If Pono Brewing Company is truly moving in there, it would be a real catch for the Hollywood District.
Pono Brewing Company describes themselves as a, “Craft brewery located in Portland, OR with roots from the Pacific Islands. Our beers have inspirations and ingredients from the South Pacific as well as popular craft-brew styles.” Eater has described them as making “light and fruity beers.” If I was still drinking I would be all over that.
Anyway, here’s to possible good changes to that space with the arrival of a new tenant. I have reached out to Pono Brewing Company to get more details regarding their presence there and will update if there’s anything to share.
