As I have mentioned previously, I write for the Market News section on the Rocky Butte Farmers Market (RBFM) website. It’s been a lot of fun and I’m particularly happy with a recent interview I did with Marcy Eichner, the new Market Manager for the RBFM. This is a huge step forward for the organization and I am sure good things are to come for the market and its supporters with Marcy joining the team.
Marcy is a recent Portlander, having moved here from Rhode Island this past winter. She was involved in the farmers market world there prior to landing in Portland. I really liked this memory she shared about the work she has done in the sustainable food sphere:
Marcy has a lot of great memories over the years of working with farmers markets and sustainable food systems, so we asked her about them. She tells us about one of them, “My favorite memory working in the food access/agricultural world is encouraging children to explore their relationship with fresh produce.”
“I ran the food program at a holistic preschool, where I prepared most of the meals for the children with fresh seasonal & local ingredients, many of which we grew together in the backyard! The kids would buzz with excitement when we picked our afternoon snack together right off the vine. I was amazed by their love for snap peas! It was a very rewarding experience to witness these little humans grow curious about the wonders of our relationship with the land.”
Definitely read to the end of the article for Marcy’s fennel salad recipe, which looks delicious—a great way to use fennel, which is a vegetable a lot of people don’t know what to do with. I like cutting it on a mandoline to get really thin slices.
Other top news from the Rocky Butte Farmers Market is particularly delicious: Fried Egg I’m In Love will have a presence at the market! This is a huge get and I can’t wait to have a Yolko Ono on the Rocky Butte. Even more reason to come to the market (plus, as a lover of 80s music and puns, the name is just the best). Check out the rest of the RBFM’s 2022 vendors on the Meet Our Vendors page (BTW, first on the list Ash Creek offers some of the best hazelnuts around).
Congrats again to the Market and to Marcy in her new role at the Rocky Butte Farmers Market!
