It might be a rainy day on Saturday, but that shouldn’t deter you.
When I first moved to Portland, I lived in the Hollywood District and would shop at the Hollywood Farmers Market on the weekends. It’s a great market—lots of different kinds of vendors selling produce, meats, prepared food, plants, and more, plus live music! It operates year-round, too. This weekend they are celebrating 25 years in business, and you can party with them this Saturday, May 28!
On their Facebook event page, they write a little about their history and the effect they have on the local food economy:
“What started with 17 summer vendors has grown into a year-round market that supports over 100 small businesses. The recent pandemic has shown that farmers markets are a vital part of the local food system – now more than ever, people want to know where their food comes from. We poured $2,700,000 into the local food economy in 2021 alone! Our market has been bringing fresh, local food from sustainable, family farms to NE Portland for 25 years, as well as music, a Power of Produce Club for kids, and weekly Community Tables.”
The Hollywood Farmers Market is an important part of the fabric of the Hollywood District and central Northeast Portland. During the celebration on Saturday you’ll get to enjoy “delicious food, music by Urban Prairie, raffles and giveaways throughout the day, and face painting and temporary tattoos for the kids.” Be sure to be there by 11am when they will honor the market’s founders. (Bring a raincoat—it looks like it might rain).
Personally, there are some vendors I love visiting over and over—Hot Mama Salsa, Scratch Meats, Sun Gold Farm, Flying Coyote Farm, and a bunch of others. I hope you’ll have the chance to stop by and help the Hollywood Farmers Market celebrate their silver anniversary! Big congrats to them for making it happen all these years!
